Have a questions regarding Cingular/ATT Tethering, hoping someone here can answer.
I've got a Blackberry 8830 phone with the unlimited data plan enabled. It does not however have tethering turned on. I've tried tethering via both USB and BT and neither work, which is fine.
If I take the sim card out and put it in one of those PC Card style cards, will it work? Or does the tethering option need to be enabled to use one of those?

Can't you jjst download a program that will work (isn't there a usb cable provided with your phone to link?)
I use PDANET on my Treo 680 to log onto the internet with my laptop in case there are no wifi spots available.
I would think that removing the sim card would not work, then they would not be able to sell many wireless cards.

I'm not sure if the wireless cards use the same SIM as the phones do. I'm pretty sure they don't.
I would look around on the net for information about tethering. AT&T pretty much says you can't tether so they won't give you any info on it.

1) If you do not have the blackberry tethered plan then you shouldn't try to tether the phone. I've had customers use the regular plan and have their accounts put on hold, cancelled, etc.
2) If you put the blackberry tethered plan on your account then you probably can use the AT&T connection manager software to connect. I don't remember the specific link, but if you search for it on the AT&T website I'm sure you can find it.
3) You can use the same SIM card in a laptop card, but with the blackberry feature enabled it will not work. You would need to take off the blackberry feature and add the data connect feature $59.99 to use it in your laptop card and then vise versa when you want to use your blackberry again.
I would say the best option would be to purchase a laptop card and appropriate plan for 3 reasons. 1) You don't have to worry about changing plans constantly and exchanging out sim cards. 2) While connected as a modem I believe the blackberry will not recieve phone calls, text messages, or emails. 3) Our new Laptop cards connect to our 3G networks which means next to broadband speeds whereas the blackberry can only connect through edge which is pretty slow when it comes to downloading data to laptops and computers.

Ah.. Thanks.
I tried the tethering, and since it's not part of my plan it just isn't working. I tried the ATT Connection software, DUN, USB/BT, and they all do the same. Which is fine, I'm not supposed to get it to work anyhow.
I only need to use the laptop connection for a weekend, so I'm not going to go sign up for a 2 year contract or anything like that.
Got any suggestions on getting this to work for just a couple days?

If you just need it for a couple of days then you might want to just go through the change and be without the phone for a couple days...
AT&T requires 2-year service agreements with all phones and devices now... :(
