Was awesome watching the footage! My jaw dropped in awe... The guy seemed like a really awesome guy. He had some engine problems and the tower just gave him a go to land wherever... So he landed his WWII trainer on the highway, INFRONT of a cop. This guy has some balls!

He says that he had to slam the plane on the ground to bounce over a van on the freeway, that's freakin awesome. You could only WONDER what it was like to watch that and I woul dhave loved to see the look on people's faces...

Guy is awesome pilot.

I can't find the info/video on CBS 2 as I just watched it. Will add later.

Here is one link that shows a couple of videos. One is of a car getting buzzed by the plane. Imagine if you were looking in your mirror and all of a sudden you saw a plane behind you!!

He says that he had to slam the plane on the ground to bounce over a van on the freeway.

1) when he called in Engine failure, the tower probably gave him clearance to land on the public road nearest his location, and simultaneously called the Highway Patrol to run a traffic break to ensure that traffic was cleared from his path before he made his approach.

2) #1 makes this whole "slamming" the plane into the ground to bunny hop a van total :bs:

I saw the same report on CNN, and they said the plane would require minor repairs...any landing you walk away from is a good one.

and so goes the old saying: "Flying is the 2nd greatest thrill a man can ever know...Landing is the first"

Why do you call BS on bunny hopping the van? He apparently had little to no engine power to get him off the ground to miss the van, so he had to bounce it.

i saw no hopping of any kind, or any "slamming"...looked like a textbook emergency landing if you ask me.

besides, no pilot in his sane mind would compromise the landing gear just to miss some jerkoff in a van...rest assured the plane would have sustained MUCH heavier damage than the van, but as the van was pulled over, and he was pretty much lined up centered on the highway, I can't see any reason why he would try to jump his plane...it's an unnecessary risk...and also, I didn't see it in the video of the landing...so yeah, I do call :bs:

if he did pull any sort of touch-and-go, it was unintentional, as the point of an emergency landing is to get on the ground as quickly as is safely possible, especially with engine failure. the sheer amount of force that would be needed to bounce a plane like that, say, 10' into the air again would be too much for the gear imho...not to mention once you do get it back into the air for even a tiny bit, your airspeed is already at stall, and you simply fall from the air, and from 10' up, that would do serious damage.

where did you even hear this jumping idea?

He said it himself, said that the footage recorded was of him coming up from a bunny hop attempt... I believe it.. I wouldn't want to hit the van because there goes the props, some asshole in a van, as you stated, is now yelling at me, etc.

He wasn't clear of missing that van at all... his wings sustained damaged from tearing down signs, so if his wings hit signs, his wing would have been ripped off by the van.
