ok here we go again right... another what to get thread. but i have been working myself in circles for the last week or so and i just need a second opinion. my birthday is coming up on friday and im thinking of what to get. at first it was the 18-200 vr by nikon... but i dont know if i can justify spending like 800 bucks on a lens. even though it is a totally bitchin lens. then i found the 18-135 and thought that this might be a good lens to serve the same purpose of the vr. but after seeing and feeling the vr i just dont think i can spend money on anything of less quality. i mean that lens is sturdy. so then i was thinking maybe a new computer would be in the works since this one is almost shit and i want a mac for photo/video editing etc. i was just wondering what u would get... im looking for a lens that i can use on my d50 like 90% of the time and would replace my 18-55 and my 70-300 for everyday shooting. but then a computer is looking mighty nice too. i just want opinions. here is one of my latest shots just messin around with the 50mm...

umm... they've pretty much always been able to. just depends on how large the aperture is and its focusing distance. ever see macro shots where the depth of field is razor thin?

I'd say go for the 18-200, its a well regarded lens in the nikon community. I think Lon has this lens as well. VR can be a lifesaver. Good optics on it as well. Just wish Canon had a lens similar to it.

Also if you're willing to go third party Sigma recently released their 18-200 OS. From the reviews on the Canon forums the optics are real nice and has Optical Stabilization which can compensate for about 3 stops of light. Only thing is that it doesnt have USM(Canon) or w/e Nikon's Sonic Motor is called. Silent Wave or something?

*edit-how bad do you need a new laptop? how often do you use your laptop vs your camera?

i love my 18-200, its an awesome lense if you just want to have only 1

especially great for vacations and trips where you dont want to bring too much other gear with you

but i was considering selling it to get a 24-70 F2.8

i highly recommend the 18-200 though if your looking for an all in one lense

well if ur still considering selling it anytime soon i might just snatch it up. i really like the 18-200 and dont think id be happy with the cheaper 18-135. so i just dont know what im gonna do.

definitely dont cheap out

get the higher quality lenses or dont get it at all

id probably let the 18-200 go

the 24-70 is awesome lense .. and i think imma end up getting a more pricey telephoto lense

the 18-200 is definitely one of the best lenses for those that want to keep only 1 or 2 lenses

gets expensive, but im thinking of expanding my lenses

I have the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and the 24-70mm 2.8 both are awesome lenses but I use my 24-70mm more. How much are you thinking about selling the 18-200?

The 18-135mm Nikkor is what came with my D80 as a kit lens. It worked beautifully during the day...hated 90% of the night shots with it though. go for the 18-200 VR for sure ;)
