Driving - Jersey to Socal

So we just made arrangements to get a 2007 MINI Cooper S as a long term test vehicle. It will be in port later this month. The fun part is that the port is in New Jersey and I will be driving back to California.

Right now it looks like I will be going through Memphis, maybe Dallas and then through Roswell. I will obviously hit a lot more places, but that gives you the basic idea of my route. For those of you who have done this before, what cool and interesting things are along the way?

Is there anything I should go out of my way to see? Cool automotive related spots? What about places to eat?

I thought about RT66, that would be the ultimate American drive I think.

Not much of it left. It's mostly Interstate or abandoned now.
