160km-An-Hour Highway Planned

Koreans will be able to drive their automobiles up to 160 kilometers per hour more safely and with less noise on the next generation highway, due for completion in a decade.
The government will invest 150 billion won ($160 million) by 2016 to develop a smart highway system. Among the investment, which will begin late this year, 45 billion won will come from the private sector.
``We plan to employ a variety of technologies to construct the next-generation highway system where drivers can accelerate up to 160 kilometers per hour,'' said Hwang Doo-yeon, a director at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.
``We will build a test bed roughly 30 kilometers long by 2016. After checking its safety and viability, the highway will be commercially launched in subsequent years,'' Hwang said.
To enable such lightning speed, the highway will have many straight sections while cutting down on curves. Its surface will be specially designed to reduce noise.
In addition, the smart road will be equipped with cutting-edge info-tech solutions including global positioning system (GPS) and Internet-based services.
``When a car accident happens at a section, motorists heading there will be warned on a real-time basis by a control tower,'' Hwang said.
``The futuristic system will also help drivers avoid traffic jams. To do so, cars will be armed with GPS sensors as well as being linked to the mobile Internet,'' he said.
Science-related ministries have also opted to spend 1.95 trillion won through 2010 in developing eco-friendly energy to tackle global warming.
Korea is the 10th biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, which most experts believe cause global warming, and has vowed to reduce its emissions.
Science and Technology Minister Kim Woo-sik, who is concurrently deputy prime minister, presided over the monthly meeting, attended by 10 other ministers.
