I saw a documentary, and it was interviewing some f-18 pilots that were dogfighting with f-22's. They said that the jet was incredibly maneuverable, but even when they did have a good shot, their radar had a hard time locking onto the targets, which gave the f-22 more then enough time to evade!!

There aren't that many F22's in service still. The F15E is still dominant over all hostile nations fighters as far as air superioritygoes. It'll be a sad day when the Eagles are retired. The F15E's payload is phenominal. Sure it doesn't have supercruise or stealth, but it's fast and plenty of payload in a mutil-mission role.

The F22 is damn nice though.

Still if I could have just 1 plane it'd be the A10. Slow, steady, and almost impossible to shoot out of the sky. Oh and the Gau-8 doesn't hurt either ;)

I heard the F-22 can target like 10 more targets than the F-18 Super Hornets?

hey can the rapter use fire& forget missles since it has multi targeting?

btw...im a nerd id so take an A10 anyday because its like a modified y-wing from star wars gyaaaAA

I believe so. They just target, lock on, fire, and bail. That's what most missiles are capable of doing nowadays.

However, about the umm A-10 Warthog. I have a little Revel Snap Titie model of the A-10 Warthog that sits atop my CRT monitor that I( don't use. One of my favorite planes because of it's scatter bombs and Phalnax type gun on the front.

i hate those damn things, they're flying bricks. For every foot they fly forward, they drop three. The F-22 is an amazing piece of technology. The way it combines RAM and structure, its the next best thing since the F-117 Nighthawk was first introduced. Id choose this aircraft over anything fixed wing the USAF has to offer, unless they come out with something better. This will undoubtedly become the next air superiority multi-role aircraft of the future. :tup2:

The noise.
The fuel consumption.
The complete defiance of the laws of physics.
The fact that it proves that you can make anything fly, if you squeeze enough thrust out of it.

Su-37.

Damn, I remember when the Raptor first took to the air, I was still in highschool! And it's only NOW getting to active duty!?!?! We need another cold war to accelerate our weapons programs! :D

I'd still take the Tomcat over anything else, hands down, no argument, end of story.

I think it can definitley play . . . we do have to hope our pilots would have an edge in skills . . . but we definitley to have an edge with stealth.

First shot, usually means first kill. And with long range missles I think the F-22 would see the Russians before they even knew we were there.

Plus what I said earlier with the f-18 pilots, they had a very hard time getting a lock.

So I think we are still safe . . . for now!!

I would think that those slow maneuvers would make them easier targets anyway...unless maybe in close quarter action???

Also saw the new F35.

About an hour drive from where I work, down in Panama City (Tyndall AFB) is where they train the new Raptor pilots. So you can see them flying almost around the clock!

Soooo . . . To start . . .

Those meneuvers are just showing of the electronics and power behind the jet.

Computers have paved the way to making specific planes fly that would normally be unable to fly. The F-117 wouldn't be able to fly unless the computer were constantly changing the surface area to fly.

If you ever fly on a commercial jet and sit over the wing, you can see how computers help create a better surface area for lift by watching the small flaps over the wing change when your landing.

Traditionally on an older jet you would have a single flap. now you have multiple flaps and aerlerones (sp?)

They say the biggest thing about a dogfight is spotting your target before they spot you. The Raptor has an obvious edge over any other fighter because of stealth.

Everyone mentions sound. As Socalers I'm sure many have seen the bluse angels. Seeing the jet before you here it (faster then the speed of sound), The F-22 recently did tests with a new missle so that it is able to deploy a missle while traveling faster then the speed of sound. If this improves, imagine if it is able to drop bombs also. You would liiterlaly see the Jet, and possiblly get blown up before you even hear it.

I think it's like any other competition out there. There is always a possibility of losing. But the airforce it trying to provide the most advance tools to prevent that.

It's like pitting a 2 of the same car in a drag race. It becomes all the driver. But take one of those cars and do every performance enhancment you can think of, and it shoud be a no brainer . . . unless the driver of that faster car stall on the line. What the hell am I talking about . . . I'm not sure where I was going with that.

Anyways, You guys can have your A-10's anf f-14's, but I'll be blowing you up miles away without you even knowing I'm in your airspace!! :D

Computers and vectored thrust!

...and a power to weight ratio above unity...

In close quarters dog fighting though, guns are what kill, not missiles...

It all depends on the individual situation, but western pilots are known to have superior training...

Ailerons:inboard and outboard are what you'll see moving up and down continuously during flight, keeping the aircraft steady, and helping it to maneuver.

Flaps are only for elongating the chord of the wing; making it larger, for slower maneuvers, such as landing and takeoff; they effectively lower the stall speed of the airframe.

And during landing, what you're seeing on top of the wing are called spoilers (they spoil the airflow over the wing, and hence drop the plane out of the sky some).

You gotta remember, the F-14 had fire and forget from several hundred miles out capability back in 1972 with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile/AWG-9 weapons system. It's technology was largely th precursor to todays stand-off capabilities in aircraft such as the F-22 - and that was 35 years ago!

Respect your roots!

Seen it back in 1984 when it was called the X-29 flown by the Dryden Flight Research team at Edwards AFB.

The Russians came up with very little by way of engineering or technology. What they did have, they stole from the USA. Dont be so quick to give the Russians so much credit.
