I mean damn man... Those cars are DAMNED fine!!!

I know it's SoCal... So yeah, a lot of people can afford it. But damn man.... A lot of the attitudes on here and mymb seem to be so laidback and cool like that average age is around 20-25. Everyone seems like the rock out with your cock out type.

I want in...

Note: serious question, no, "I'm a drug dealer" type stuff lol.

I work on BMW's and you would be surprised how many people live and work for their cars, I have had guys with new 7 series that have less in there bank accounts than I did when I was 20 years old (never leave your receipts in the door pocket if you need a window regulator). I had a guy with a 5 series last week that needed tires ($50K car thats a year old) that couldn't buy tires because the check would bounce.

Alot of my customers, I would say 50% have the car because they can just afford a lease payment and have to have an expensive car, have NO money for tires or anything else and live in a not so great area or in an apartment and have serious priority issues. I have had customers that have their loan through BMW financial, they bring it n for service and the car has a red flag attached to the VIN# for missed payments and we repo their car while its in the shop.

I would go with 25% do well and can easily afford the car and up keep, and have a nice house and stuff and a decent cushion.

the other 25% are just plain well to do baller status and don't care about the price of the car or work, they just want it done when promised and washed.

You're dead on with your post. I think that carries over into the MB crowd as well. Some have their priorities straight and some don't. The typical assumptions also stand true. As much as some of us hate to admit or accept, there are the extreme youngins who come from well off families and have the cars handed to them but who are we to hate? :D Then of course there are guys who have to earn their toys like everyone else.

I don't know if you all will find it surprising or not but 91% of all AMG's driven off the lot last year were leased. The lease thing has a little more to do with the depreciation and write-off factor than affordability (for most folks I know anyway). You do not want to be stuck holding the bag owning an MB/AMG when you purchase. Values tank way too fast and many of the owners are investment guys or have aggressive CPA's and good tax attorneys so they're more likely to find "creative" ways to make things work out to their advantage. And finally, not to mention, the fear of not having a safety net once the warranty expires.

Here's a thread with profile info of the team members on myMB: http://mymbonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3903

If you all are really that curious, I'll start a thread in OT with the same profile info. Maybe we'll ask the street pharmacists if they're willing to franchise. :D

and im glad the topic has stayed civilized, i could see some comments about how high end BMW/MB owners are snobs and wahtevers

but ive met a lot of great people like ling and some of the MYMB guys that are totally down to earth peeps

i agree, owning nice cars, you sacrifice alot financially, but i think alot of people in car industry live by this rule, "work hard, play hard"

i have no issues with kids whose parents handed them their car (be it a C63 or a 1986 cavalier).

generally speaking, if a parent hands a kid a Merc/BMW/Audi/luxo car, the parents are probably affluent and can afford to do so...who are we to say that their kids can't/shouldn't have nice things...if the parents can afford it, go for it.

my parents gave me nice things growing up and I was happy to have them. I was also appreciative to have them and knew that not everyone's parents could afford to do so. Accordingly, I didn't act like a huge snob (at least I don't think i did).

I am in the processes of working very hard myself so that when I am older and if am lucky enough to have children, I can afford to give them nice things, too.

I think the snobiness factor comes from the parents' faults in their duties to raise the kids and the kids' upbringing. My parents are by no means overly affluent but they aren't starving either. I've grown up in a relatively affluent suburban community (as has my sister) but I've never lost sight of the rest of the world...i think so-called "rich" parents often do not/are too busy to teach their children that not all the world operates as they do.

When the E92 M3's come out, I may lease one, so I can beat the tar out of it and give it back. I love AMG cars more than our M series, because MB knows how to build a motor that puts down torque (E39 M 5 is the exception, Lon)

As far as hatin on kids who buy their kids new cars, eh, I wouldn't complain if my dad bought me a $60K car when I was 18, but I wouldn't know who to appreciate it as much if I would have worked for it myself. My main issue with that is its just bad parenting spoiling them AND giving them a powerful expensive car when they don't know how to drive..

Funny statistic, when I worked at Porsche, I found out that OVER 50% of all GT2's registered, have been totaled....................... money can't buy driving talent, that car is lethal

Personally I save up for my cars and put a healthy down payment. I always keep one lease and one purchased car (I like to have one car I can put lots of miles on and mod to my hearts content). This of course means I have to plan my purchases but I think it makes it that much sweeter.

As far as kids having nice cars, thats cool. When I was young the most expensive car my family ever owned was less than $2000. I bought my first car at 14 years old from an under the table job. For me its more of a love affair with my cars and I really do get lots of enjoyment from owning driving and showing off my vehicles.

Never forget that cars are toys. Take care of your responsibilities and what you do with the rest is gravy. Also, it ain't just the cost of the car, but the monthly mods that add up.

I learned a long time ago not to judge people based on the car they drive. There are plenty of people that can afford luxury rides and choose to put their resources elsewhere.

The college grad part is probably right. I'd guess more mymb members have degrees than not. I'd also like to think that we have a a good blend of skill sets with an old school mentality. Help eachother out and everyone gains.

I tottaly agree about the crashing point. I bealieve that if a parent is wealthy enough to give their kid a (reasonably) high performance car, the should drop $700-$800 to send them to Skip Barber driving school for a day. That way they actually know how to handle the skids that they will probably end up putting themselves into (RWD + big power).

oh, and btw, my insurance went down enough to almost cover the price of the course, which makes it a great deal, as well as a lot of fun.
