You can travel with it. Just make sure you turn-off auto-retrieval for e-mails.
EDIT: Yes. I said auto-retrieval could've been turned off, but then the normal consumer doesn't know that.
Hopefully the customer and AT&T can come to happy medium to resolve this situation.

Dude . . . constant data . . . you know you're gonna get charged outside the country . . . and you know it's gonna be expensive (does the iphone have an international plan option?)
I used my phone in Kuwait . . . 6 days of calling . . . maybe a half hour a night . . . $400 bill . . . But I expected it, so no biggie (they refunded me $200 since I used it on deployment, but still I knew it was gonna be expensive.

x3 i am constantly amazed at how little common sense the average consumer has.

Word. I have to admit that $350 for a refurb'ed unit is tempting.

Yeah. I'd say the refurb is a great deal. The only difference between the refurb and a BRAND NEW one is that the refurb is in a white box while the BRAND NEW one is in the black iPhone retail box.

a new one is $399. Is it really worth the extera $50 savings (barely 15% of the purchase price) on a phone which has already been broken once? in just 3 motnhs time?

This guy is an idiot and a liar. Pressing the sleep button on the iPhone puts it into sleep mode (duh). You have to hold it down to turn the phone off. As with all smartphones configured for IMAP push, it will retrieve email in sleep mode in the background.
If you're travelling, just lock the sim before you leave. No foreign charges, and wifi/ipod/apps are still fully functional.
