well at 170k on the odo the tranny gave way.
i was pulling out of a driveway and lost gear in first. put it back in park only to hear a vicious grind.
where do you guys think i should take it?

That's horrible, I'm sorry, hopefully it won't be that bad; was there grinding at all or slip while changing gears before this happened?
Maybe it's time for an upgrade? *cough* b5 s4 *cough*
Good luck, maybe someone else will actually be able to help you.

it slipped like this one time several months ago - i turned off the car put it back in gear turned it back on and voiala... but not this time, i hope i didn't fuck it up more by putting it back in park after it slipped.
an upgrade would be nice... if i wasn't upside down on the financial end of the car haha
Lon, that's who i was thinking about if i took it to anyone.
Car is a 99 A6 2.8 Quattro Tiptronic 5spd

am i just really dumb for not wanting to part with my car?
my oldest brother and dad won't stop telling me this either.
the tranny and motor are very solid - i could not part with the car for a trade in value @ 172k on the odo
It may be better to roll it onto a new car, that way its under warranty and you don't have to worry about anything but services for 4 years. Sure the motor and trans are fine now, but that gearbox is a ticking time bomb, when was the last time you did a T-belt and water pump? That car is on borrowed time, its Russian roulette at this point, I would trade it in before you have to start dumping $1K into it a month, then your really in a bad spot. I deal with this all day long, I have a 90K mile E46 right now that needs $14K in a motor and cooling system stuff, car is worth $10K tops in the condition it is in, running, not running its worth $500.

rollin 6k of my loan balance (minus maybe $1000-2000 that i will get on a trade) just won't be pretty, that takes a good amount of options away from me that i would want for a new car
first tbelt service was @ 90k then another @ about 150k less than a year ago incl serp belt, water pump, therm, etc using oem parts. and i just replaced most the vac lines this last weekend
i know your point about it being a ticking time bomb but i'm doing my best to keep the car in good shape!
Stuff like an ABS control unit, tranny, diff have nothing to do with how you do service, I didn't know you owed so much, it never hurts to run numbers and see what can be done, thats free!

I've had a few numbers run
with my own credit, i can get a used mazda 6.
with my dad's signature i can get a new A4, R32 or something nice!
when i went to circle to drive the mk4 R32 to trade in my car they were going to give me like $500, and roll the balance over... payments came out to $732 for 6 years ($52k total)
so you can see why i'm a little reluctant!
Get a Rabbit, they have tons of mods, fun to drive, and cheap.

G T I FTW!!
And you get BOOST!!! WIth tons of upgrade options to give you MORE BOOST!!!!! :)
I have a 03 mkiv gti 1.8t. Best car ive ever owned, i highly recommend one. But i understand where youre coming from, its hard parting ways from a car you love and put so much time and money in. But a 7-8 year old car w/ 170k. I would consider an upgrade bro.
BOOST FTW!

besides wut he^ said if u plan to do any performance mods to ur car u'll void ur warranty so a used car with a couple yrs left on the warranty would prolly be better than a new car with a 5 yr warranty

so mike would you advise against an E46 M3??
=)
i want a fast baller car like that - GTI's are dope but I'd only get a F/I R32
btw i'm half way done paying someone for a supercharger for my car
i haven't paid him anything in like several months... but yea i plan to get that on my car some time. unless i get rid of it of course, then i got $1200 ready to put on the next car
jwill'sMK4
10-12-2007, 02:26 PM
arent superchargers more universal the turbos cuz u could get a used r32 and then put the blower on it
oc-audica
10-12-2007, 02:28 PM
the R32 chargers are centrifugal
mine is a twin screw mounted on top a custom manifold
the PES kit for my car are hard to come by used, so selling it for what i paid won't be a problem, if i still get it

r32s are sick, i love how they sound.
I'm not to familiar with audis, is it safe to put a supercharger on a car that already has 170k on it?

10-12-2007, 03:10 PM
eh... i wouldnt do it but then again im gonna put a BT kit on an 80k+ 1.8 t so i dont have much room to talk but i do plan to but a lower mileage bottom end in the car when the engine is about ready to give out hopefully the BT doesnt speed that up too much
170K, even if the motor is healthy, thats pushin your luck,
An E46 M3, unless you make a good living, can put you in the poor house if you don't buy one thats in factory warranty. CPO is okay, it covers the big bits like motor and trans, but no audio, trim, rubber pieces which can nickel and dime you, but I'll hook you up. You can get an 01 under $30K now, but I would avoid that and try and get an 03-04 that is still in full 4-50 or in CPO. I get a mad hook up on BMW's so let me know, if you find one private party, I'll check it out for you.

170k might be pushing it but i wouldn't do it if the engine showed any signs of mechanical failure; if if the leak down, vac, and compression tests were no bueno
its a conservative tune!
and thanks mike - no doubt my new car will be CPO - i almost bought sam hubinette's 2002 M3 for 30k later last year (he was stayin in my complex) but he disappeared after he took home the gold.. imagine that =)
You can find some that are still in the tail end of their CPO warranty, If you PM me the last seven of the VIN, I can run it for you and let you know what it has left warranty wise. Most good deals on cars like that are had at dealers that don't deal in BMW's and don't know their market value or what warranties it has on it, A friend of mine picked up an 03 M5 with 18K and a little factory warranty left, fully optioned with 100K maint and CPO for $41K from a MB dealer.
