I saw Cafe Tacuba live before a Beck show at UCSD. They were awesome. Better than Beck, in fact.

Mas musica en espanol

Molotov -- Mexican punk. Some pretty good covers and original stuff. Starter songs, Martian (The Misfits' I Turned into a Martian), Frijolero

Manic Hispanic -- They were a bunch of Mexican gang bangers, and their parrole officer told them to either start a band or go to jail (or somethng like that). They chose music, and now they cover every punk band I have ever listened to. They sing in Spanglish, and change the lyrics to cover cruising, the barrio, menudo, tios, la llorona and of course, heinas. They are very funny, and the lead singer makes his voice sound like any punk singer you can name. GOOD stuff!
Starter songs, The INS Took My Novia Away (The Ramones' KKK Took My Baby Away) She Turned into Llorona (The Misfits'? I Turned Into a Martian), I want to be a Cholo (The Vandals'? I Want to Be a Cowboy)
They're not in iTunes, so if all other sites fail, try manichispanic.net.

Camper van Beethoven -- Some of the guys from Cracker. Same basic sound as Cracker.
Starter songs, Pictures of Matchstick Men

Mojo Nixon -- Rockabilly-ish. Some pretty funny lyrics. Starter songs, Drunk Divorced Floozie, Tankman Blues (song about the guy who stole the tank in La Jolla and drove it over to the 163)

NOFX -- Funny-ass lyrics. Essential LA punk
Starter song, The Brews, anything else, really

Unwritten Law -- San Diego punk. Awesom band. Starter songs, Blame it on Me, Get Up, Actress Model... (you may have heard that on the old 91X)

The Vandals -- Orange County punk. very funny. People That Are Going To Hell, I've Got an Ape Drape

Guttermouth -- More OC punk. also very funny. Starter songs, Surfs Up Asshole, Power Up, Do the Hustle

The Toadies -- "Darker" rock, punk. Starter songs, Possum Kingdom, Jigsaw Girl

Those are a few of my favorites and a few that not many people have in their collections. I also have a lot of Butthole Surfers, Dead Kennedys, SmashMouth, Beastie Boys Bad Religion.
I'm going to The Pancake House. I will throw a few more up later on.

Well the reason I ask is that if you don't give an example of some of the specific bands and songs you have been digging lately you just end up with a thread full of random suggestions of music from people. in the end you may only find one band you like, and while this is still a winning situation, it isn't very efficient.

I do this same kind of thread every now and again on other sites. here is a link to one I did on the vortex that yielded some pretty good finds for me in the end.

Supersystem
Felix Da Housecat

I prefer Drum and bass myself so I like...

Bad Company
anything on the Renegaade Hardware label
Pendulum is really making a name for himself these days
Andy C.
John B.

Hope it helps.

Here ya go, all info is in the "blog" since I pretty much updated it right now mainly to post in here (added a rock band: Oomph!). Just a note though, only two of the bands are in english since it's a German Playlist... Yes... I only listen to German Music, however, you said you don't care as long as it's not country or opera, and these are DEFINITELY not mainstream here in the US.

http://profile.imeem.com/gMws6d/blogs/2007/09/16/chfeOsvT/updated_awesome_music_to_play_when_youre_just_chil ling_out_and_other_stuff

So yeah, just go there.

P.S. One of the bands is somewhat Opera... They have a Choir in the background, like a church, band is E-Nomine, so You can just check out Blind Gaurdian (English), Demons and Wizards (English), and Oomph! (German)

P.S.S. Blind Gaurdian and Demons and Wizards are both the same vocalist, umm... I wouldn't play their music unless you have a damned nice sound system, not required.. But it makes it NOICE!!!! For example Touched By The Crimson King (Used in the SoCal Corrado Gruppe video)

I have all the albums. Reisse, Reisse is a good song, Ich Will, Mann Gegen Mann, Amerika, and Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen are all excellent songs.

Besides the blessed Rammstein is Hansel Und Gretel, Static-X, Another Life Corrupt (ALC-LA Hardcore), Tsunami Bomb (female sung punk) Abandoned Pools and Silverstein are always in my arsenal.

And can't forget Bayside...
