Chrysler Classic Speed Festival
Presented by North Island Credit Union
A Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Production
October 6 & 7
NAS North Island, Naval Base Coronado
Staged on the runways and taxiways of Naval Base Coronado with Navy aircraft and ships in the background, the Speed Festival will feature over 225 of the world's top racing machines from years gone by competing on a spectator-friendly 1.8 mile course. These vintage racecars are chosen to compete on the basis of their historical significance and certified authenticity.
In addition to the racing action, tour Vendor Village, the Car Club Corral and the Classic Car Collection.
Here's the deal: It's THE vintage/classic speed festival, where all the Ferrari 250GTO's, Testarossas, LM's, vintage Porsches, Jag E-types, Cobra 427's, etc etc are brought out and driven like they were meant to. You'll never see such a great collection of race cars actually being raced! The US Navy shuts down a large portion of the airfield at NAS North Island in Coronado and turns it into a 1.8 mile track for the vintage racers. It happens once a year, and it's coming up again this October.
How does this involve us? Well, certain car clubs like the Ferrari Club, Shelby Club and the Porsche Club are invited to show their cars as an organized group in a special presentation area. Traditionally, the Corrado Club of America has been invited to be part of the special exhibition, and this year I have once again been given the discretion to open up the invitation to a wider range of Euro enthusiasts! So I can have 60 VW’s, Audi’s and BMW’s come and enjoy a weekend of racing and show off their cars!!! (BMW’s and other marques, there are already your specific owner clubs coming – you hook up with them if you want to park with lots of cars like yours, or you can hang with us)
In the interest of having lots of fun together as a huge herd of euro enthusiasts, the group will be showing under the auspices of SoCalEuro. Lon has given me the go-ahead to organize the gaggle of groups that usually show up separately to come together as one (and the organizers of the event begged me to simplify it for them as well!)
Event will be happening October 6th and 7th. We're welcome to show off as a group both days, but I'd like the big turnout to be on Saturday the 6th. Those who can be there both days, great! I'll be there too and we'll have a great time!
You do get in+out privileges with the special exhibition parking pass, so you can leave anytime and come back. Passes are FREE for the special parking area. You will *still* need to buy tickets for admission to the race event to be admitted, tix run $30 for the weekend or $25 for one day and you can get them at http://www.fleetweeksandiego.org/coronadospeedfestival/generalinfo.html or at http://www.ticketmaster.com
We will NOT-repeat-NOT be meeting at the old caravan meeting spot, (the parking lot of 1st Assembly of God church on Phyllis Place.) Since I’m now on pastoral staff at a different church right off the 15 in Mira Mesa, we’ll be meeting there instead. It’s located on campus at Miramar College.
Directions: From the 15, exit at Carroll Canyon Road and head west. Turn right at Black Mountain Road, through one light then turn right into the parking lot at Miramar College.
Meeting time is 8am, Saturday October 6th!!!
For the caravan, FRS radios are encouraged of course. We'll be on channel 3sub2. Take my cell phone # with you in case you're delayed, it's 619-417-3872.
I will pass out the special exhibition parking passes that morning, which allow you in+out access to the show. (Yes, you can bail for food and we save your parking spot for you!) If you can't come til later, just hit me on my cell phone and I *may* be able to meet you at the entrance to the exhibition area. Then again, I'll be wandering the pits amongst the Ferrari V12's, so I might not be able to hear it ring. Best idea is to be on time!
I will be bringing a nice shady pavilion tent, but feel free to bring one of your own as well so we can set up a nice cool place to kick back. Bring your own folding chairs and lots of sunscreen for wandering the grandstands and pits!! Oh and a towel to sop up all your drool when you see what kind of cars are parked all around us.
Email your RSVP’s to g60racer@aol.com, and post here too please, to encourage others to come and keep the thread bumped up.
I have 60 spots available to show. PLEASE do not say you are going to be there and take up a spot if you really have no intention of showing up! Last year we had to turn away people because others said they would show, and they didn’t – so we had wasted passes. I’d hate to repeat that. So on your honor, and at my discretion, RSVP for passes.
Separate from those 60 spots, which are part of the exhibition where you get to show off your car, there is also a judged car show that you can register for. It’s $40 extra to be part of that, and you can register for that at this site: http://www.fleetweeksandiego.org/coronadospeedfestival/carclub.html
