Hey Everyone.
Reddvdub here,
Just wanted to let you all know I'm ok, if you have already heard and here's what happened if you haven't...
When: Thursday morning, 5:30am . 27th, September, 2007.
Location: I 15S @ the Market street off-ramp
I was on my way to work that morning and got over in the number 3 lane (there are only 3 lanes at this part of the 15) Almost to my exit. A white car merged over to the number 3 lane with no signal where I was. I had nowhere to go so I took the off-ramp since there was an opening there... from what I remember I was still going freeway speed and tried to slow down, but because I swerved I got on the off-ramp, but hit some of the dirt on the side of the road. I lost traction and crashed through the guard rail; I continued on through the on-ramp now since they parallel eachother and ended up slamming into the concrete barrier that blocked the road from a small cliff side. All my airbags deployed and saved me. The GTi bounced off the barrier and came to a stop. I assume I was knocked out for a moment from the airbags. I came to and tried to open my door which was kind of stuck so I kicked it open and got out of the car. I tried to stand, but couldn't so I hobbled over to the barrier and tried standing again, however it hurt to much, so I laid down and a roach coach was coming up the on-ramp and stopped. The man driving got out and called 911; the ambulance arrived and took me to the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. I was admitted. No alcohol was involved in my crash, except the Monster I drank on the way to work. I suffered from to fractured vertebrae in my upper and lower back plus some minor bruising from the seat belt. They conducted CT scans and X-rays with no internal damage. I was released from the hospital from my overnight stay so they could monitor me. I feel a little better after the accident with the meds they gave me. The GTi is totaled however, but insurance is covering all the damages so hopefully I can get another ride soon. I wish I had paid more attention to the car that ran me off the road so I could have at least pulled the plate number. I'm back home and can be reached at 760-481-5516 if anyone wants to get a hold of me. Hope to see everyone at Fusion of Esco soon. Talk to you all later.
Preston
I'm thankful that the car saved my life... Safe does Happen...
I'll post up pics once I can get to my car in the towing facility

Glad to hear that your vertebrae was not in a worse condition than what could have happened. BTW, for future referrence, in case anyone gets into an accident of this magnitude or worse, do not get out and try to walk it off despite your strong urge to move. Cases like Preston have led people to instantly parallyze themselves upon movement and even death due to a broken neck. Folks dont feel this pain yet because of the shock and rush of andrenaline until they try to move and bam, they worsen they're condition. Im just glad that Preston didn't worsen his problem by walking. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Another driver saved by his VW.... with many cars this could have turned out very, very badly.

I'm pretty familiar with the location where this happened. I always get over in the #1 lane before I even reach Hwy 94, so I don't have to mess with traffic coming off Hwy 94 or exiting at Market St.

At 0530 there are lots of drivers who still aren't entirely awake, or maybe they were out partying the previous night. It's also twilight -- sunrise not until 0630 or 0640.

The bottom line is that even the very best drivers can sometimes encounter some totally unexpected event. You will be okay, and nobody else was hurt, so this turned out better than it might have.

Thanks everyone.... I'm going to see the damage on Monday... I will say that even though cars had it's fair share of repairs VW def. makes safe vehicles for which I am thankful...
about the R32, it's a possibility, don't know what to get yet, but it'll def. be a Euro.

You are absolutely correct, but at the time this never crossed my mind. After thinking about the crash, I'm just glad that the passerby stopped and made me stay on the ground where I was so I didn't hurt myself worse... The doctors said they were surprised by how little I was injured in the crash, because of all the scarns they did there was no sign of head trauma or neck injuries. It still hutrs to stand and sit-up from the bed position, but they gave me some nice meds for that... they were most concernd with possible paralysis. They were relieved once they could clear me from having to wear the neck brace. I'm in a body brace right now just so I can keep my spine lined up. Again, thanks to everybody. I really appriceate all the support. Everyone has been so helpful through all of this and I am very thankful. God Bless

Here's the info on that:
On to the parts... I meet w/ the adjuster on wed, and can hopefully find out if I'll be able to get all my mods off the car. From there I will go through my posts on all sites and those that mentioned wanting the parts will get dibs based on post time, then I will post up a thread w/ the names and parts that have dibs aswell as all the other parts that will be put up for sale. It will be first come first serve from then on.

I'd like to say thanks to everyone for their support and best wishes... I once thought (keep in mind I'm on meds for my depression, prior to the crash, and am looking at things diff. these days) that no one would care if something happend to me. However, now after all of this I have found that my close friends and the entire dub community on all forums and those I have met otherwise this past year have been there for me and I have recieved nothing short of positive energy from everbody. When I say this I mean it from the bottom of my heart.... I had Mercury then, they paid me for my aftermarket stuff, but then haggled me on the value of my truck, then just 2 years old. I eventually won out, but I switched to State Farm, it may cost a little more then some others, but my family has it and they don't even blink or hassle you when it comes to auto or home claims.

That's fair.

Those factory parts don't have to be new, and maybe don't even have to be working, I'll bet. They just have to be there.

Damn! I'll have to swing by and say what's up... shoot me ur cell #. I basically crushed my L-2 Lumbar & T-8 Thorasic the x-rays looked pretty bad, don't know if they will have to do surgery yet, I'm hoping not cause if they did it would prolly be a vertabroplasty.
