i just got a '66 beetle and have heard mixed opinions on VW's aircooled engines.

one being that they're very reliable, which i had always thought as well, but i'm also hearing from other folks that they're not reliable at all...

one of my buds had one of his pistons melt a little from a long roadtrip...
but i always thought that as long as you're not stuck in traffic it'd be alright?

Its extremely reliable given good care and when everything is setup right, I've covered ten of thousands of miles in old air cooled VW's, they are simple its not the motor itself the fails, its either poor service work or old parts that fail. What motor do you have?

i've got the original 1300cc motor that came in the 66' Beetles, with 52k original miles wooo!!!
but yah i was just wanting to make sure it'd be able to make a 350 mile drive (from SD to Fresno)

but would you suggest making a rest stop every hour or 100 miles just in case?

From my peronal experience and from what everyone has told me as long as you are moving you should only need to make stops to fill up gas. As people have said they are great car and the only issue is when you are in a hot climate sitting there at idle because they tend to run a bit lean and don't like to keep cool. You will notice alot of people put an external oil cooler on the top of the car to aid in cooling but as for your trip to fresno you should be fine. Just watch your gauges if it looks like its getting hot then take a break.

If your going to Fresno from SD, have AAA plus for the 100 mile tow, bring a good spare and jack, bring extra oil, a fan belt, points, and some basic tools. Before you leave do a basic tune up, oil change, valve adjustment, plugs, cap/rotor and points, bleed and adjust your brakes. Oh and an Ipod for going over the Grapevine, since you will be putting in 2nd or third in the slow lane with the diesels.

If I have to move an old bug over 30 miles I use a tow bar anymore and tow it with a truck.

Alot of people used to do the rotary swap, but now its the STI or WRX motor thats the hot ticket. Any 5speed conversion is expensive, wether its a 911 swap with a 901/915 box which I have never been a fan of since its geared for a torquey 6 cylinder in a heavier car, and it requires butchering your pan, But a Berg 5 speed or equivalent, makes nice for the highway.

I have my old bug slated for a turbo bracket car, but the more I think about it, a Baja would be nice.

Right, almost forgot. Check out www.thesamba.com if you haven't already. Pretty much all aircooled there with classifieds and a technical section.
