View Full Version : Veteran Cuts Down Mexican Flag

Sorry about the title, it is not meant to be Brash!

This is a video of a Bar, I'm assuming owned by Mexicans that were flying the Mexican Flag over the American Flag.

Please . . . this is not meant to bash Random Mexicans . . . I wanted to post it to show some Patriotism.

Now, I'm not sure of the follow up, they could have very well not known, but I'm not sure if they were told and asked, and why they wouldn't fix the mistake, if indeed it was a mistake.

The Army Veteran was I think more respectful then I think many people would have been. He didn't try to pick a fight or anything. He did what he needed to do and left. I'm not sure what the Law is actually allowed to do, so I think his approach was appropriate.

Again . . . this isn't a F#CK Mexicans Thread, so please be considerate of our Mexican (or Latino, sorry I'm ignorant!) Members and Friends . . . but comment away on this Asshole that thought it would be cool to fly his flag over mine!!

well, if it was displayed inside the bar, I wouldnt have a problem with it. I wouldnt like it and likely wouldnt patronize that bar either. But posting that outside on a flagpole like they did. Wrong answer. He did the right thing in my book by removing it.

I loved how they had no comment after the fact. Id suspect they had no comment because they KNEW they were wrong.

Im pretty sure they were dumbfounded. I doubt they know all the laws of this country. Hell, i don't know all the laws of this country, but i do know common sense. Unfortunately, not everyone has common sense. So, just like that man, it is our job to teach all poeple (immigrants and citizens) good common sense. Ive had a few neighbors hang the smaller American flags from the front eve of their house. Sometimes those flags were torn. But because of my politeness, ive had them remove those flags and replace them or not set up any at all. Here is a link (http://www.flagkeepers.org/Home.asp) for proper flag rules and etiquette. Spread the good word people, because it makes us look bad as a nation when you let others fly our colors all faded, torn, or ragged.

I don't think that was the best way to handle the situation but I'm kinda glad he did that.

I get a little pissed when I see people flying the flag incorrectly but putting another country's flag over our own is just too much in my book. If they were just flying the Mexican flag, I wouldn't care.

Ignorance of the law is no defense either. They don't have to know there is a law to know they put someone else's flag over our own.

Yeah, I'm glad he did it, that took some balls. I'm not sure about the fighting and war part, but this is America and no flag should fly over ours here, Mexico, Canada, Outter Rangoon, period, nobody sits higher than the King in his own castle (although I hear in Texas they fly the Texas flag over the American Flag all the time, anyone know if this is true?)

Ignorance of the law is no defense either. They don't have to know there is a law to know they put someone else's flag over our own.

It may have been disrespectful or it may have been a poorly attempted sign of unity but it isn't actually illegal(according to the Reno police and ACLU).

"The Reno Police Department said in a statement Wednesday that while the U.S. Code establishes protocol for the display of the American flag in relation to other flags, the protocol “is advisory and is not a criminal statute.

“There is no sanction for violation of the protocol and is not enforceable by local law enforcement,” the statement said.

Likewise, Nevada law contains provisions related to display of flags but “none of those provisions make it unlawful to violate the protocol established in the U.S. Code,” the department said."

Heres the code:
UNITED STATES CODE
TITLE 36
CHAPTER 10
§ 173
(c) No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America, except during church services conducted by naval chaplains at sea, when the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for the personnel of the Navy. No person shall display the flag of the United Nations or any other national or international flag equal, above, or in a position of superior prominence or honor to, or in place of, the flag of the United States at any place within the United States or any Territory or possession thereof: Provided, That nothing in this section shall make unlawful the continuance of the practice heretofore followed of displaying the flag of the United Nations in a position of superior prominence or honor, and other national flags in positions of equal prominence or honor, with that of the flag of the United States at the headquarters of the United Nations.

Jim Brossard's actions were clearly illegal though.

It's cliche I know, but I blame the media. They didn't do their research, sensationalized this story, and sat back to reap the rewards. Did anyone bother to talk to the owner of the bar?

Speaking of media:Link to video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG1Gj0qdr08)

Cavuto didn't even watch the fucking video... "How did you get up there?"

Jim- "I heard on the Bill Manders show that the flags were flying"
Again the media(Manders) fanning the flames and cashing in.
Manders- "You know this guy stole a flag... uhh... (wtf did I just say) ...so to speak(whew that was close, good save Bill good save, I'm so quick, no wonder I have my own show)"
Manders- "What we're really concerned about is identity theft" WTF is he talking about

Jim- (OMG, WTH, this douche bag is using me)

All that said, I respect Jim Brossard for his service and patriotism and I hope no charges will be brought against him.

They fly it at the same level.

All states can do that.

At a Padres game a few weeks ago, they had some kind of Salute to Mexico. I'm not sure what the actual name of the day was, but they did tributes to some TJ officials, Mexican players and announced the starting line-up in Spanish. The thing that got me was that they flew the Mexican flag at the same level. They didn't fly the big American flag on the tall pole. Just the US and Mexican flags on poles side by side. Bu for a while, I thought that the Mexican flag was above ours. I was PISSED! I was looking for someone who could get me to a park manager. Fortunately, I didn't find one, as I looked it up when I got home, and saw that they can fly it from a separate pole, at the same hight, although on this page.(#11 http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html) it talks about a US flag, a foreign flag AND a state flag. That's a good site. It covers just about everything.

Oh, jeez. Scroll down to the fire hydrant.

You can do whatever you want to do in Mexico, I really dont care. If you have problems with America and our flag then by all means, stay in Mexico.

I love my flag and my country. Ive served my country proudly with the flag proudly on my shoulder thru every country ive traveled thru. Yes if you were in Mexico, but no if your in America.

I do recall that you are not a citizen so I do respect your opinion as much as I disagree . . . now if you were a Mexican trying get citizenship (which you have clarified you are not) or were a Mexican who is now an American Citizen, I think it would be expected that you respect our flag as your own not losing respect for your Mexican Flag. I'm not saying you have to think of our flag as better, by all means, to some people it is just a piece of fabric, while others believe in the 13 stripes, 50 stars, and all the history behind the flag. I'll be honest . . . I have no idea why there is an Eagle and a Snake . . . or why your flag looks Italian . . . but I'm sure there is a great story behind it. But if you're gonna live in the US and display the American Flag, do it right. Unless you're trying to make a political statement, but then you have to accept the consequences. And I don't think that that is an opinion of my own, I think it a requirement by our government.

allow me to present to you a scenerio and tell me what you would think.

Lets say there is a Bar in Mexico owned and run by Americans. These Americans living in your country proudly display the American flag on a flag pole with the Mexican flag beneath the american flag in your country. Does this insult you?

If a simple opinion expressed to you on a forum insults you, then I suspect you would be insulted by the above scenerio and you would do what exactly?
