Some might consider this slightly offensive as well.............:D Can you tell the people who are patriotic now and those who were not patriotic, and now are...apart?

Just ask a person to define patriotism. That in itself is an eye opener.

I think it was interesting how adamant that guy was about how the flag isn't a logo and doesn't belong to anyone. To me he missed the point of the statement. I mean, somebody is making the lapel pins and other items. Somebody is capitalizing on the surge in patriotism (true or bandwagon) monetarily.

Since when does displaying a flag make you more / less patriotic. I think anyone that does display a flag for self gratification is still proving the ideals of patriotism . . . by demonstrating that they understand what that flag means to everyone else that cares.
Sure, they may think that ohhh . . . my neighbor put up a flag, so I should too . . . but they are still fulfilling the ideals.
Just because they didn't enlist, and now they are displaying a yellow ribbon because their HOA asked them to doesn't mean their not patriotic, or that they even know what patriotic means . . . but for the one house in the community that has a son or daughter or father or mother overseas . . . that ribbon means something totally different!

I agree.
This thread reminds me of the other flag thread not too long ago. And in this case: Section 8d. reads, "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel."
When you consider the fact that the flag is being used to profit on patriotism and the fact that it goes against flag code and regulations, yes, I think it could be little offensive. I guess in our modern America though capitalism wins out over or gets confused for patriotism.

I'd gladly wear an American flag pin to show my patriotism, but a jacket made from a flag is a different story altogether...

What about the president? Does'nt he, himself wear an American flag lapel pin? So he is also in violation of section 8d. But is televised nationwide with it on so people think its ok. I honestly don't think its offensive. Even tho it is against flag code. If they were say a pair of stonewashed jeans with the American on it, then it would be offensive...

Its not really apparel and is more like the flag patches worn on a soldiers uniform.
Offensive is a pair of flag boxers. Nothing like rubbing your taint on our country.

You shouldn't use him as a reference when it comes to our flag. :D
I'm just being the Devil's advocate here. I'm not personally offended by flag pins or the such. I just get annoyed when people pick and choose their rules and regulations to fit their wants. Not that anyone in this thread did, just that I got that feeling from Dobbs commentary.

Anyone who bases their vote on whether or not a candidate wears a flag pin gets the government they deserve.

You guys miss the whole point here.
I ask you all What is real patriotism...I know what it is, for once I'd like someone to tell me. Not what they think it should be but what it really is. Tell me please. I will burn you if you are not right...thats just the way it is.

It means different things to different people and that's just the way it is.
You are asking people to tell you what real love for their country is... That is unless you just want to hear that patriotism is "love for one's country" which is shallow and lame.

I'm confused. You make a thread titled:US Flag lapel pins offensive? and then link to a commentary by Lou Dobbs about US Flag lapel pins. Where did you ask us about real patriotism?

That's the actual definition. The "lame" and "shallow" were part of my opinion of that definition.

Being patriotic is one thing... But I remember seeing a picture of a US neighborhood with all the flags and stuff on every house... And alongside that picture was a picture of Nazi, Germany, with houses all flying the German flags....
There is having a patriotic failthfulness in your country, and going a bit extreme...
In the meantime, I have to go fix the flag outside as it is wrapping around the pole...

Giving everything in your power, every bit of what you can spare. Sometimes it even giving more than you have. The real meaning of Patriotism was forgotten about. Today in 2007 A flag is a flag. It's sad.
Sending care packages to a troop you dont even know. Helping out at your nearest YMCA when you know there is no money to be made. To be unselfish about giving till the job is done. THen moving on to the next. Keeping your eye on the prize and being a wonderful representative of your city state country when you travel to help abroad. Doing work to help others that are less fortunate than yourself. When in fact you too are not exactly fortunate. Being a patriot means to give and do so much that you dont even stop to notice how much you've done...
... until somone pats you on the back and says..."look you did that"...
but patriot just gives a nod, and a thanks..and gets right back to work.
My only reference beyond that of real patriotism... is of all the patriots during the world wars 1 and 2 that gave up so much for their men and women fighting that war.
watch "The War" on KCET...you might learn a thing or two. Maybe see how easy it is to upkeep a victory garden.

Funny thing about those american flag lapel pins, they're made in Communist China.
