It works... all it does is brew beer.
Honestly though... just get a starter home brewing kit. It brews larger batches and your overall costs will be much less. Not to mention you will be using the stuff all the homebrewers pretty much standardized on so you can get ingredient kits and recipes from all over.
I'll post up some links to where you can order kits later.

It took me a sec to find this thread again.
Home Brew Mart is here in San Diego. Starter kit 1 is pretty much everything you need minus bottles and a pot for boiling. It goes on sale for 90 bucks and comes with ingredients for your first batch. The other kids step up to better gear.

Northern Brewer has a pretty good name among home brewers. They seem to have pretty good prices and they have some good information on their website to let you know what is still needed in their different starter kits.

Well I have decided to go ahead and get the kit from home brew mart, just wondering if you knew of any good reading I should get ahold of prior to starting my first batch?

You should be able to find quite a bit of information on the web. Your kit will also come with instructions. The only semi hard part is sanitizing things. You want everything your beer touches to be clean. Also, start saving and cleaning bottles now. You'll need about 48 of them. You can't use twistoffs and dark bottles are preferred. Homebrew isn't super clear and all beer is light sensitive so its better to use dark bottles.
If you really want a book or something. Charlie Papazian is like the god of homebrewing. He used to be a nuclear engineer or something similar. He has a pretty good book.

His famous advice is to "relax and have a homebrew". Its an easier process than you think so its best to not stress about it.
If you have any questions when your instructions get there, post up. There are at least 3 people on here that are into brewing.

The folks down at Home Brew Mart are very helpful. Go down and get your new kit and save on shipping. They have a bunch of handouts that are very informational and always have Papazian's book in stock.
Plus, you can taste some yummy Ballast Point brews while you're there.

They are a rip off on their books. I bought mine there and they charged me twice as much as amazon.
Its a bit of a drive from palmdale but Tom is right on about the beer tasting. You can go to the back of the store and order beers by the 2 ounce taster for like a buck or something cheap like that. Its pretty cool because the beer is brewed right there.
