He'd do better to sell his stang private party, and then get a loan for his M3.

Well, according to BMW's data, it is a real M3, the car went from NJ to FL, and somehow ended up here, it may have a salvage title, FL cars are always suspicious, 95 is the E36 M3 to get, you can get alot of power out of them legally since they are OBDI, cooling systems are troublesome, 95 cars had the S50, they were prone to piston slap, at this mileage, it will need ALL suspension bushings, Automatic is either a ZF or GM box, both have issues, the ZF is a better box, but more expensive when it does break. Speedo is easily tampered with in this car, mileage may not be accurate, I would take it to one of our recommended BMW independents in SD and find out if it has any major issues, or if its been wrecked or flooded. It will cost you $150 or so, but thats peanuts in the long run if it keeps you from a bad car. If they wont let you take it for inspection, don't walk away, RUN!!!!!! Thats a bad sign.
I would figure it needs atleast $3000 worth of work in some sort of fashion, between bushings, mounts, leaks, cooling system and such, first things i would do off the bat is replace all the hoses, expansion tank, T-stat/housing with the metal one, and an upgraded water pump. The sunroofs can be issues, as with the window regulators, the electrics can be a little haywire too with door switches, and the alarm, if fitted can be troublesome. Check the trunk floor from underneath where the diff mounts, they have been known as a weak point and can tear out, we use to seam weld them when adding the Dinan supercharger kits or it would rip them out of the floor.
Pluses are the car is a great car, parts aren't too expensive, and they drive and handle great when the suspension is set up properly.

Nice writeup Mike. I was gonna mention the subframe, but noticed that you included it. I would also include looking at replacing the suspension (if stock) and the bearings.
On the plus side, heated/powered vader seats are a plus and with black, the interior can easily be dyed to a much newer looking condition. The nice thing about the tranny is that they are also relatively cheap and easy to find a takeoff replacement when it's time. My auto turned 203,xxx on their "lifetime fluid" with no issues at all.
