How many of you would (or do) drive a manual car in SoCal Gridlock at it's peak every single day? We're talking like 15 S/N at 4pm... EVERYDAY...
Just wondering :o

I have 3 Tips, but the next car will be a shifty.
The S6 and A6 S-line only came in Tip, so I kind of wish I had bought a 6-speed S4.

Automatic as daily driver. 15 sucks. Stick is only needed when you are actually driving. There is no driving on the 15 (between 6:30 AM and 7:00 PM) for those times you don't need a stick.

Chipped S4 MT as a daily with coils.
It's...fun? I used to get so tired of driving stick as a daily, but now I'm sort of numb to it.

my manual keeps me awake
BTW on a bad day it takes me 1h30m to go 30 miles...

I use to drive automatic (tiptronic MKV Jetta) before but now I have a manual
I don't mind the traffic too much (I'm not in the traffic during rush hour) so I really don't mind driving a manual, never get sick of it really

In the afternoon you barely need an engine. My record was over 2 hours from miramar to rancho bernardo. Thats like 10 miles. I could have walked it as fast.

i really don't think it's as bad as some say
i'm driving tip though and am close to stepping in to a new MT6
i dont drive in traffic like that but driving manuals for over 10 years, you learn how to drive in traffic without using the clutch all the time.
I like it better then auto in tight traffic actually.

I ran into this question when buying a new car, since I drive in traffic almost everyday. I ended up with dsg :D and it kicks ass!
Driving any M series BMW in traffic is no fun. When you finally get to where you were going your left calf is twice the size of your other.

isnt that the truth. sometimes i wish i had an auto during server traffic, but the rest of the time i am glad i have a manual .

I drive both all the time, and really I don't see how a manual is that taxing. I have an aircooled 911 with a sport clutch in it that is higher effort than just about anything I have ever driven, and I used it as a daily for about three years. I drive our M Coupe in traffic all the time I even drove it to Bimmerfest last year and that was something like 3 hours of stop and go traffic and never even thought about it. I really have no idea why people complain about manuals in traffic.
The only time I have ever really gotten sick of the manual was driving my 911 into the Monterey Historics and having to do the one car move at a time on the really steep hills that go into Laguna Seca.
With that said, if a DSG or DSG type trans is an option on my next vehicle I buy, I will probably get it. The reasoning won't be traffic owever.

so true... I was fortunate enough to drive an e39 M5 a couple times to work and back, and driving in traffic sucked! It was an extremely powerful car(for me at least), and it was like the car just wanted to take off every time. Like edm said, my left leg would be sore by the time I was home.
But I still love that car :D

I do the 5 North and while I get tired of it some times, after the first 6 months or so of it, you just learn to not notice it.

Manual is only annoying when the road is not flat. Steep inclines are annoying when you're stuck halfway up.

That doesn't work for LA traffic. Still traffic in the Carpool lane.

Wow, I didn't know nearly all of you commuted in a manual, I guess I should get out from under my rock...
Didn't think there would be this much input either.

Also quite dependent on the car.
My Civic was much easier to ease along at a crawl in first.
The GTi always seems to want 1st-2nd-1st-2nd.
