Just thought I'd share...

I make the trip from San Diego up to Sonora a couple times a year, about 490 miles and always keep track of gas mileage each time. So when I got the car I was getting an average of 28.5 mpg on the trip. Now after I added a K&N filter, Autotech exhaust, lightened flywheel, new ground wires and a bunch of other maintenance I'm getting an average of 32.2 mpg.

Here is a pic of the car, nothing beautiful but obviously gets me around -

Damn, that's a lot more efficient especially with that drive. Good job. I don't think I have ever had more than roughly 26mpg all freeway miles in my car. Gas Queen :(.

I used 3 one-way trips when it was stock, varied from 28-29 mpg. Since the mods/maint. I've used 4 one-way trips to get my current results, varying from 31.8 to 32.9.

If anyone was wondering

Cool, nothing beats great mileage nowadays! My ABA MK3 would get around 25 city and 32 or so highway, the MK2 VR with S/C would get about 12 with a lead foot (how else you gonna drive it?) and my trusty MK5, when running gets around 22-24 city on light throttle, 17 if I lead foot it, and about 33-35 on the highway on cruise

I think its so funny how this same thread is over on the vortex and the response I get is the typical vortex. "oh well I get 34mpg", "oh my aba swap with cam, intake, chip, exhaust, blah blah blah gets 38 mpg".

I just try to share a little info on how I got an extra 3mpg or so and everyone has to be better than me. I hope that Socaleuro won't end up like that crap site.

Damn, that's about double the mileage I just got going to Sutter Creek and back! V6 Explorer...

Well, yes of course poeple will respond with their experience in MPG. What else do you want people to tell you?? good job, good research, good milage??......
Your MPG's are respectable considering the car, nobody wants to beat your milage or you personaly. And if you aren't interested in other peoples MPG's why do you think we are interested in yours? So take it easy and don't start this vortex crap.
I still think your cars MPG is good but

Vortex sucks, I've been a member for 5 years and my post count, if I remember isn't even over 300.

Your proof is extremely plausible, the more efficient you can make an engine, the less it has to work, it takes less fuel, opening up the intake and lightening the rotating mass is great in anything.

I remember when the ABA chip first came out, and every one was shocked that the mileage AND power would increase.

Then you have things like my old landcruiser, it got 8MPG up hill, down hill, towing, in traffic or cruising, it weighed 4000LBS, had 150 HP and the aerodynamics of a brick!

My post count on vortex is like 2... it might still be 1... I can't remember.

That's pretty good mileage. I get just over 30 in the TT. I'm hoping that might go up a little after I fix a few high mileage issues with it.

Our Touareg gets 20 mpg on a good day. Hills just kill the mileage on the V6. I don't know how long we are going to have it though. Susan and I are talking about going all hybrid by sometime in 2010.

So we get about the same highway mileage, I have a co-worker who has a hybrid Civic, and it gets 43 on the highway............................... I could live with the 7MPG hit and keep the GLI :D FSI :D

I wanted to see other people's experience and there were some great responses. I got a few more ideas from the thread and that was my whole purpose for posting. It just kills me when people just blatantly lie, put other people's hard work down or just post complete nonsense. That in my opinion takes a lot away from the site.

Did you get new tires yet?

If you swapped out your 5th gear for a TDI gear, your mileage would go up even more!

Mostly highway speeds (75-80 mph), but this included L.A. traffic, the Grapevine and the hill climb to get into Sonora. I wasn't really interested in my top MPG but more interested in everyday type of MPG. Oh, and the car has just about 150k

the vortex attitude can be annoying, but the forums have their uses.

Nice mpg!!! Reminds me of when we had an A2 Jetta Carat with the RD motor, got great mileage.

I haven't had a chance to check the milage on my Subie lately. Before the engine was broken in I got 28 mpg. It should be better now but I have a heavy foot.

I do miss my MK2 16V with the tall 5th. I could go about 100 miles on an 1/8th of a tank.

I got the clutch/flywheel from Bahn Brenner - $250
The autotech exhaust, filter and a couple other small things were free... I let them use my MK4 Jetta for like two weeks and got some compensation for it. But if you just keep an eye on the classifieds you'll find some worthwhile parts to keep your project on budget .

My total investment right now is at about $900ish including the cost of the car. Also, some of the MPG increase I saw was actually from maintence - plugs, wires, various gaskets, proper t-stat/fan switch etc... When I got the car it totally ran like crap, still kinda does but thats from the ISV and those can be a little pricey.
