So I was driving home from work today ('03 GTI, 1.8T AWW), when my car lost all power, So I downshift, and still no power, I put the clutch in, and the car dies. I try to start it, and nothing, I get it home, and look at the flywheel / ring gear, and they both move, very freely, and the engine doesn't budge. I heard no clanks, clunks, bangs, or any other really bad noises, car just died.

I talked to my boss at work and he thinks that either the bolts sheared off of the crank flywheel, or the crank broke right at the first journal, and then running the car to a stop ground down the rest of the break. I am out of thoughts, or, and the OBD is reading a cam position sensor, but that could be what it read when the car broke.

Let me know any thoughts, and should this be covered under the drive-train warranty if it is still within the warranty period. Thanks in advance, Kyle

Is your engine modded?

If so, could be tough for warranty work.....

Edit: N/m just saw your sig and mods

I don't know if I have ever heard of a 1.8 breaking a crank. It would take something pretty serious to have that happen.

Have you taken a look at your timing belt yet? If that's broken, you're most likely not gonna get any warranty help on it

If the timing belt is under the cover then it is fine. Also, if the timing belt was broke, the crank would still turn.

Haha for sure man, we both had our experience in that area haha

are you looking at the crank spin or the cam? It is quite common for the t belt to sheer off some teeth (probably by the crank). I seriously doubt the bolts sheered of the crank to flexplate (seen this once on a abused r32 though). look down at the pulley while somone cranks it and i can almost guarantee it spins.

So when you turn the key, it doesn't turn the engine at all?
But it does turn the flywheel? Makes no sense. What exactly is it doing?

Ok, So I got to look at it in the light, the flywheel spins, and the serpentine belt spins, but none of the timing components spin. Thanks, Kyle

Sounds like your tbelt stripped. BTW, your engine code should be awp.
