Hey guys, I was told to join up over here since I live in the Socal area. the guys over at GolfMKV directed me this way :).
I've been a VW driver in the past with a 2000 Passat 1.8T, but I eventually sold that and moved onto a series of "unfortunate events" and have finally found my way back to VW.
I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 MKV GTI pkg1 w/ DSG. I picked it up slightly used at Capo VW and I couldn't be happier. I absolutely love this car.
Hope to see some of you on the road.

Awesome. thanks for the welcome guys!
I don't have much funding to do mods yet but I do plan on getting some bilstein struts with H&R sports pretty soon, so that will clean up the wheel-gap ;)

You don't really need the bilsteins if you get the sport springs. They will be fine with the stock shocks/struts.
Welcome to the site as well!

I've heard so so so many conflicting responses to something like that though.
My original thought was just to get the eibach pro-kit springs, then a number of people kept telling me I need to do the whole setup, to which several others fired-back that I dont.
What's the advantage/disadvantage if i Do/don't?

You can run the Eibachs just fine with the stock shocks but they will wear out a bit faster than a better aftermarket shock setup....
Im sure this is the case with any spring kit that lowers your car 1-1.5"... anything beyond that your probably going to accelerate shock wear even faster...
Just my $.0002

Mike on here has the Eibach pro-kit springs on his MK5 GLI with stock shocks and it is fine. It gives it a nice drop too. Nothing drastic. He is also a master tech for BMW, so he knows what he is doing. Maybe he will chime in!

Mike might be a master tech, but its always better to get a spring shock combination that is specifically designed to work with each other
the spring/shock is a very precise combination that takes place to get the rebound and damping properly setup for optimal ride quality and performance
with that said, yes spring only with a stiffer spring rate can work within a comfortable level of tolerance, and as people have stated, will work fine but will end up wearing out your shocks quick, i would estimate 1-2 year life span on of the stock shocks compared to a 5-8 yr lifespan of the shocks on stock springs
so sure you can run just the springs, but its not "optimal"
what optimal is ... everyone has their own opinion
and yes i believe Mike is intelligent ;) and he knows he's not running optimal, but that said, the stock shocks will last long enough for his needs ;)

ah see that is the kind of response I'm looking for.
My needs are definitely longevity, so that pretty much answers that question for me. I'll be getting the struts as well looks like.
I drive a lot guys, 125mi/day 5days a week. I need this to not be too harsh but stiff enough to keep my entertained. I drive ortega highway a lot, and when it's wide-open I drive it pretty hard, and to be honest, I am very impressed with the GTI's stock handling and I don't feel the need to change TOO much. My real goal is just flattening out the already minimal body-roll, and cleaning up that unsightly wheel-gap since I'll be keeping the stock 17" Classix for a long while.
So. H&R sports + Bilstein from parts4vws, sound like a plan?

Maybe get an adjustable shock for the days you wanna carve and the rest of the time, open them up to keep them comfortable.....
its an easy adjustment.... :)

I was very happy with that same setup on my MK4 Jetta, H&R + Bilstein. Not too aggressive, not too low, handles well, and reliable. I've had the setup since late 2002, so just over 5 years and about 80k miles. It still rides and handles well today.

Welcome to the site! I am running Neuspeed springs on stock shocks right now, and the ride quality is excellent. Maybe the shocks will wear out sooner, but I am just going to wait until then to upgrade the whole setup, car looks good, see ya around.
