5W40 aint really 5w40. the 5w means the winter rate which I feel is sorta stupid because how can you tell what your winter rate will be not knowing your regional conditions? I digress.
5w40 is fine but a 5w30 might be closer to what is recomended for your car.
Also, if you have more than 100K miles on your car, synthetic might not be a good choice since the conditions of your oil seals might be marginal, the synthetic is really good at getting past weak seals. if you notice ANY oil seepage iround the engine go with dyno oil instead. Synthetic will make any seep a full on LEAK like, right now.
If everything is clean and dry, pour away.

99% of approved oils are 5w40. The ONLY oil that isn't 5w40 and still approved is mobile 1 0w40. Looks like you answered your own question op.

I just did my oil change with Royal Purple. I don't believe they sell a 5w 40 so I went with a 10w 40.

I cant seem to find 5w40 only 5w30 on RP. Could I still use it? Oh and I did find some AMS Oil 5w40 Euro formula but its a little more.

I just switched to this at 55k, and honestly I DO feel a difference... I'm not into the whole placebo effect, but I really feel the engine running smoother. 0w40 Mobil 1 from now on, for me.

I was running the 0w 40 Mobil 1 for probably the last 30k before I switched to RP. No problems so far but can't really tell much of a difference. I wish I had an oil temp gauge to tell if it is running a bit cooler. The guys at G5 recommended the 10w 40 for my application.

Well this is when I lived in Toronto, Canada....so a local VW shop had it stocked.

I haven't used it before but G5 sells it along with RP and they have rave reviews about it. They said both of those are really closely matched with the motul costing slightly more

I've used mobile 1, elf, pentosin and motul. My favorite so far has been motul. Car runs much smoother with it, than with anything else. Perhaps it's placebo, but I can tell you one thing. I'm on my 3rd oil change with motul, whereas with the other stuff I only used them once.

The only Mobil 1 that is VW 502/505 approved is the 0w-40. All the numbers mean is the viscosity at a certain temprature. The first number dosen't really mean too much since we live in So Cal.
As for the synthetics that will seep past seals hold true for the older type synthetics. The synthetic oils toady are not as harsh as they used to be. I switch to synthetic on my VR6 at 100k and no leaks. If your motor is not seeping oil...you'll be ok.

Inter Auto Parts San Diego, on Convoy St, also carries Lubro-Moly synthetic engine oils... as well as authorized fluids for VWs like G12 coolant, brake fluid, PS fluid, etc. Good prices on brake rotors, too.
