I just got a vag and a cheap laptop to hold me off until I get my good laptop for school. but I wanted to try to disable the esp cause it is annoying and I do not like having the light on on the dash it makes me think it is a cel :( anyone know the coding?

No.

You can modify the ESP switch to automatically disable on startup but you can't do it via VAG-COM. Or if the light annoys you, put some electrical tape over the ESP indicator.

You must be, like, an awesome driver.

Turn off ESP for track days... leave it on the rest of the time. You shouldn't be purposely driving anywhere near where it would kick in on a public road anyway.

There is a reason you can't just turn it off with vag-com.

That light should only come on when the system is activated anyways. If it on all the time you probably have an issue with the system that should be checked out.

You should never need to turn that off, unless your at a track. Its there for a reason, to save your ass incase you run out of driving talent, but it can't overcome physics. On the new BMW's you can't really even turn it off anymore I have seen SO many BMWs that have gone over a curb because the owner feels the need to drive with the DSC off constantly.

I drive with mine on constantly in the GLI, and its less intrusive then BMW's, I can get away with decent wheelspin on a launch, and beat the car pretty ragged in a turn without it kicking on, its a good program IMO I would leave it alone.

premature post. I found that if you hold it for 10 sec or so it will turn off without the light on. I dont know how you mrk4 guys can drive with it on. it is way too intrusive for my tastes. like taking a turn at 35 mph when speed limit is 30. That is what gets me.

I think the new ESP actually has 2 different settings. One if you press it and another if you hold it.

You're right though... ESP really hinders my ability to go over 30 :p

If you are driving normally and it kicks on during a 35mph curve, then something is broken.

Giving him the benefit of doubt, it could be the surface. Just a little gravel/sand can cause the light to blink.

My car sometimes blinks driving over wet train tracks if the tires are bumping and slipping around enough.

Your's must be much more sensitive than mine (Audi vs. VW, maybe). Mine never comes on unless I whip through a 90 degree turn too quickly or try and beat the merge on a wet road.
Even tooling up the fireroads back in the woods never kicked it on.

They do funny things like that if your tires are mismatched and have different rolling diameters, or you have one really new, and one almost bald tire, it can be enough to upset it.

Esp and traction control are two different things. You couldn't turn esp off even if you wanted to. What you turn off when you press the esp button is traction control, which is understandable since some of our cars don't get traction until 3rd gear.

I hate it when I go for a quick launch, and I let off just a bit too soon (still new to the car/clutch) and the friggin thing kills ALLLLLLL power that I built up and I just sit there like a moron.

Its different when it slows me down or what not cause I'm on a wet surface, but if I want to LAUNCH, let me! (always careful on public streets!)

Haven't posted here in quite a while. ;)

For the record, ESP (and traction control) on the MkIV can be disabled via VAGCOM by recoding the ABS unit. Ours is disabled, and the ABS is still operational. I'm pretty sure I found the recoding info somewhere on Vortex - it's been a while. I do remember that the coding is specific to the part number of the ABS control unit.

Alan, you don't have ESP, you only have traction control (ARS). ESP was an Audi only feature until the 2003 model year, if I remember correctly. I've had a 2000 MkIV without ESP - trust me, it's a very different beast under specific conditions. ESP compares braking and steering wheel inputs with G-force sensors to determine if the vehicle is moving where it thinks it should be. If it decides it isn't, it takes over control of the throttle and uses selective ABS to try to correct.

The reason ours is disabled? Far too many driveability issues with a 24V Stg2 VF. Simply turning off the traction control didn't take care of it. Once ESP was disabled, the problems were gone and it drives like you would expect. Fighting the wheel in first and second under full throttle doesn't cause problems anymore.

In our case, the thresholds of the system were set far too low. I have no idea if they improved or retuned the system after 2003.

Unless you have a very good reason for doing so, don't mess with it. ESP is a valuable safety feature. I have a feeling that you're just looking to permanently disable the traction control, not ESP. (That's exactly what the button in the dash does. ESP will still kick in if it needs to.) You should find the info you need on Vortex. I'm pretty sure there is a way to modify your switch in the dash to take care of it.

I had very specific reasons for disabling our ESP and didn't make the decision lightly, so I don't recommend it. Now traction control? Meh, who needs it... :P

ok. ok. I think I want to disable the traction control. is there a way to do that with the Vag? btw the holding it for 10 seconds didn't do anything.

yes it's very easy to do. with a vag go into your abs controller and recode for your vehicle. my car is a 05 gti and coding is 004096 or 4096. abs only. this was the 1st thing i did when i got my Vag cable. been flawless ever since.

doesnt that disable esp and asr and what not? or does this only disable traction control.

dang what supposibly does holding it in for a count of 10 do?

you can recode to whateva. i have esp/asr/abs/edl. I originally recoded everything off. but the ABS warning drove me crazy. so i coded for abs only. ESP/ASR/EDL IMO slows me down. think about it.. whos driving the car? you or the Bosch ME7.5? id prefer me because i can feel every bit of the car when i'm driving. all i need for the ME7.5 is to determine my fueling.. not talking ish or anything. i mean even abs takes longer to stop than threshold braking.

Not a damn thing.

I just added a 33mf resistor across the wires for the ASR module; this way it defaults to off upon start up.

I personally hate ASR in the dry; try merging with faster traffic from a stand still and you'll spin the tires to the moon, then the ECU will cut ALL your power for close to half a second...then, of course, you're foot is flat on the floor trying to get you moving before you get plowed, and when the ECU gives you power back, you spin...and then the ECU cuts it again...repeat.

I can do a much better job of modulating the throttle myself in the dry.

Now in the rain, it works quite well, especially in conjunction with EDL keeping the chassis going straight when hitting standing water. Just try disconnecting your ABS in the rain...it's positively frightening.

Not a damn thing.
I tried to recode it but it is missing a number. So I added a 0 at the end. I do not think it worked. I took my usualy turn and it pulsed the brakes as well as the dash light. did I recode it wrong?

try 004097. in Vag's SW, if you move your mouse pointer over the code it should pop up a window and kinda guide you along.

what year car?
