damn.. straight up... That's a really good deal, but with that many miles and no warranty... who knows what it wants out of your bank...

2400 miles a month seems almost impossible!! Anyone call to see if it was a typo?
Never mind, that's from here to San Diego like 5 times a month. that would suk!

Well erm.. If the car was bought in late 1999 or even early 2000... That would put it at about right...
IE: He bought it Wednesday December 1st, 1999... That's about 8 years, 1 month, 10 days. So about 97 months... about 232,800 miles give or take...

Crazy amount of miles for a car like that but I wonder how many miles till a rebuild which wouldn't be cheap.

How much is a factory M5 engine, maybe it can be replaced by the stealer, I know it's a bad idea... but.. It's pretty cheap for the car already, not sure how much a mint one goes for now, but it might be about the same price in the end, right?
I wouldn't touch that car with YOUR bank account. 230K everything is worn out and will cost twice the price of the car to set straight. Engine, trans, diff, steering and suspension, all shot.

i think its worth as a shell, and thats it
i think the motor and bushings and a lot of sht needs to be replaced
Oh my! That is a perfect candidate for a Stage 3 HPF turbo once they release it for the M5. I'm only an hour north of Atlanta. It might be time for me to sell my shop car! :D
I don't mind replacing all the suspension components, bushings, bearings, etc. It will need all that done for a properly setup turbo anyway.

Not always true! Long Freeway / Interstate Miles are easy on a Car....much less shifting, brake usage, suspension rocking, etc then a mostly City Car with 100k. Heck, even things like just door hinges see a lot less wear. I do 70m a day in my M3, I do normal maintenece stuff (144k, just replaced Slave & Master, and then the Clutch, not cause it was too worn, but the $1.50 plastic pivot pin broke! Original clutch and had another 20k more easy in her!)
And on the more expensive cars like the M5, it's usually owned by a Business Dude, he drops it off at the dealer whenever the little lite up display tells him too. (unlike a 200k Camry)
Research a Car's History before dissing it for miles.......

forget all that, its an e39 m5 for 12,500! thats a good enough reason to buy it already.
I'm a BMW master tech by trade, I can assure you that car is worn out. And your clutch seems to be another case of an incomplete clutch job. You ALWAYS replaced that white plastic pivot pin whenever you have trans out or the clutch apart for replacing. If not, they fail.
All BMW's should be serviced inbetween SIA intervals for good measure.

The Original Clutch and Pin lasted for 4 owners and 144K? Say what?
Yeah, thats why you replace them every time you have it out, since they are a weak point and a cheap part. If yours was the original I would be VERY suprised..........

I would believe anything Mike says about these cars. Just as i hope people believe me about Vw.
Hey Carlos, my GLI has a helluva shimmy under braking in the pedal, and the whole car at about 90-75, steering wheel is fine. I think I have warped my rotors. Plus I have a pop/squeak in the front end when its cold, you seen any common ailments with this yet? I know my dogbone is starting to crack at 23K miles, I'm gonna upgrade to VF's.

Rotors do get warped on these cars (my old gli got warped by 3k miles and i drove it lightly). I think they are only covered 1yr/12k miles. Have you checked if you have a bent wheel? These wheels get bent pretty easy and we have even had some split straight down the middle in 2 pieces. Lastly, only thing i could think of is strut bearings making noise.
Yeah, I have my buddy next door at Commonwealth so I'll go bug him. Goodwill!!!!! My wheels are straight, I just balanced them and eyeballed them.

Yes, it was the original clutch. First clutch I've ever had to change out of 20+ cars, most sticks. But I cant account for the PO's skills, but I do have all receipts. PO was NASA Instructor (he did most of my track mods) and one before that took good care of it. I've done over 50k in the last 2.5 years...and I have the clutch out of it, a few chatter marks, but it had a good 20k more in it at least. And until I got it, it was always dealer serviced. Now I do most of the work unless I don't have time, then my buds at German Auto Garage in MV take care of me....
At C&C a few months ago, saw a sweet old bimmer, don't remember which model off hand, but it had over 500k and mostly original parts IIRC. Was pretty impressive looking.....
Now we make 100K mile throw away cars. 90% easily recycled materials, haphazard electronics, engines that run rough, gearboxes that shift like crap, dark times, keep your E36. All these guys hopping on the 335 boat are gonna be sorry after your car is running a long time after theirs is a beer can. That life out of a clutch in an M3 is almost unheard of, previous owner must have been a good driver. That pin causes all sorts of trouble. I've had guys in the shop replace clutches and fail to replace that damn white pin and they come back broken. They are getting really hard to find in decent shape. If you PM me your VIN I can send you your BMW vehicle history.

I already have it, I don't buy a car without. I also get my parts at cost too, neighbor runs Mesa Perfomance up here in OC. (old bimmer focused shop)
Cool car we just got (my 16yr bought it, his first car) is a '94 E36 318is. Was a special order in Canada for a Girl. M3 Dakar paint, Leather, Moldings. At some point it came to SoCal and they Federalized it. (has a CA Vin in the Door Jamb) Then a brother added ACS CF Wing, 3 Spoke Wheel, Pedals, and Badges. Besides that its bone stock! 120k+ (everything is in Km and Celsius! LOL!) Drives awesome and is SUPER clean. My Oldest (18) bought a real sweet 2001.5 Passat GLX V6 4-Mo Variant last year, was Doctor owned and unreal clean as well, got it for a steal. (both work for In-N-Out and pay their way)
I hear ya about the new stuff, imagine a new 7 series 10 years from now, all those motors and crap....what a nightmare!
That new 135 is tempting though! LOL!

Damn thats nuts, I wonder how many times they had to do extensive engine repair. The E39 is great, but isnt always reliable.
I had a 2000 E39 M5 in Anthracite from 62000mi til 78000mi, and I had to do all kinds of maintenance. I got rid of it as quick as possible. It was probably my favorite car Ive had tho.

Our Family 99 528i has 280k miles , original block/trans, no issues, always runs premium, 2nd set of cats, never misses an oil change, interior still looks like NEW.

GF's bro has an E34 5'er and it's nearing 200k miles as well, still runs strong. :)
however, with an M-car, i can imagine when something goes wrong, you'll be paying out your nose. I'm just glad that I still have CPO warranty and Extended Maintenance until August this year on my M3, because it's had some work done on it that would have made me cry if I had to pay for the repair out of pocket.
When i first got it, i had to have a lot of the major SMG parts replaced [pump, pressure accumulator, actuators, etc, to the tune of $2500-3000+ if i had to pay for it], and Inspection II, which i was quoted $3200 and $2500 from 2 different stealers...and $1300 from an indy shop. I Was glad i had extended Maintenance that day. :D
