Alright. I just got back from break where i left my car for a month and a half sitting at my house at college. I came back and took it to the gas station to fill it up and i found that the fuel filler door won't release. so i thought i would open the trunk and pop it open manually. well my truck release doesn't work either. not with the key or the switch in the door. i tried sticking my key in the key hole and it's packed full of something and it won't let me put the key in far enough to twist.
Any ideas? i need to get some gas and i need my truck i'm about to move to a new home and walking all my stuff is going to suck. let me know if you have had any experience with this problem. thanks in advance.

sounds like someone hooked up your locks with some glue of some sort, only way i know is to get some heavy duty adheasive remover and tape off your truck so you dont get it on the paint, an then try to spray it isnto the lock if you can

if you can get a can of brake cleaner (with the tube) and try appply some fluid inside the lock, it might be able to disolve whatevers in there. Be careful to not get it on the paint. Otherwise get in thru the seats and manually release the trunk and remove the lock assembly for cleaning.
Thats what id do.

My problem isn't so much getting the trunk open. i need to get the release switches in the door to open the fuel door and the trunk. I think that the switched might be broken.
I can't manually release my trunk from inside. the golfs don't have levels inside and i can't get the interior paneling off.
try taking off your door panel and jumping the switches.

i'm thinking that's the problem. i'm going to try and find a garage and run that.
my question for you though mike, is, does the key's trunk button release the trunk's lock through that switch? or is it an independent system? because if it's independent then the remote doesn't work either. if it relays through the door switch then i think you're right.
no, its separate, your remote is probably got a bad button. The only time you can totally lock the hatch of a Golf is to lock the rear seats (if you have them) out the switch in valet mode and leave only the valet key. Sounds like you have a frozen gas door actuator, bad remote, crap in the lock and fucked up door switches........... thats a terrible combo.

that sounds about right.
I'm going to try to take apart the door tomorrow depending on temperature.
With the Remote though, it does flash the lights but the truck lid doesn't make its normal sound. actually it doesn't make a sound.

what I am thinking, is if the latch mechanism that will release the trunk lid is jammed, then it doesn't matter what switch or button is used. Thus making the door button and remote useless.
I am so damn bored, if I could get outta the house (kids), I'd drive up there and help you get this figured out and opening :) Too bad I don't still live in San Clemente...

ok sorry to bring this one back from the dead but i'm still having issues with it.
i've done some testing on the system and the switches truck etc. here's what i have.
i took the door panel off and removed the gas and trunk lid switches. on both of them i have taken my multimeter and done continuity tests between the contacts that trigger the motors in the back of the car. the continuity is there when the switch/circuit is "closed" ie i'm pulling on the switch to open the door. so the switches work according to that
i have also taken my meter and tested the wires in the door. both the gas door and the trunk release are getting about 12v from the car on the wire they are supposed to. when i take a piece of wire and manually close the circuit you can hear the trunk motor and the gas door motor working and opening their respective door. so the wires work.
now i have taken apart my trunk to get to the motor (not easy when you can't get it open by the way) anyway the motor works when i put the wire in (as seen above) however my lock cylinder on the door seized up a bit from oxidation. i'm fixing that not a problem.
now he's the problem, i have the two switches out of the door panel so i can play with them easily. i've take the two switches and put them into their respective plugs. when i trigger the switch the trunk switch works just fine now. i don't know why. however the fuel door is still having issues. and i can't seem to trace the source. i mean i've seen the door pop open when i touch wires together and i've seen the switch close it's circuit correctly but when i put the two together they don't work. i mean the connections between the switch and the door wires look clean (no corrosion) but that seems to me to be the only place.
any ideas from this info? i would really like to get my gas door and trunk working i mean it's kind of a pain in the a$$ not having a working trunk and a real pain in the butt if someone accidentally closes my fuel door, like my buddy did the other day. thanks guys.
edit: i should mention that the whoretex is worthless on this topic i've sent hours on that damn search page to no avail.
