Well I wouldn't use these numbers for taxes but:

One you need to know how many gallons ur gas tank is. I'll assume 13 gal of usable fuel without running out of gas.

So, 300mi/tank / 13 gal/tank = 23mi/gal
$588 gas/ $3.50/gal = 168 gal of gas consumed
168gal x 23 mi/gal = 3,864 miles.

14.5=full tank.
3.5= gallon
14.5 x 3.5 = 50.75 a full tank? seems alot***
(588/50.75) x 300miles = ~3475

^^ what he sed hahaa

When I fill up on empty I usually put in 12 gal though, so I'm getting 4200 mi, but English was always my forte, not math.

Just a thought... writing off over 3K miles based on your "average" numbers might not look real good during an audit.

Also, what do you do that you can write-off mileage? Do you drive for work other than a daily commute?

Edit...

Your last post answered my questions.

k now that i think about it im pretty sure i didnt do over 3k miles in driving.
but riverside <--> pomona is around 60miles round trip and i did that twice a week for about 4-5months before i gave up on it since it was costing more to drive back and fourth than the money i was making

i coulda sworn that you can only write off mileage if you use ur car as a company car with proof or if you work for the government.

i may be wrong tho.

If you are filing the proper form as self employed, mileage for work related events counts.

Ted, are you filing the correct for that says you were self employed? Because in order for you to claim those expense as a work expense, you additonally have to claim all the income from that endeavor.

I am not sure, but I also believe your "company" has to have grossed over a certain amount of income before it is considered legitamate enough to claim expenses from. You can't claim more in expenses than you do in income. I'm not tax pro, just word I have picked up.
