Okay, so I made it a few months up here driving, but to be honest I've grown VERY tired of dodging all the bicyclists around Santa Cruz...

so, I figure, since I can't beat them, I might as well join up

There is something of a fixed-gear craze up here, so I'm looking for a decent frame to start building on...

So, If you've got something you think I might be interested in as a broke ass college student, let me know!

I'm 6'1" and weigh about 140...gangly as all hell.

ok...

Answer me this...

Are you in good physical shape?
Are there a lot of hills in Santa Cruz?
Do you not value your life?

If you answered yes to any of these, I would suggest not going with a fixed gear... Actually just the third question... questions 1 and 2 = road bike :P
Get yourself a single speed with at least 1 brake.

If you're 6'1", you'll want a 57-58cm frame.

Single speed/fixies have a horizontal wheel drop out. that's how you adjust tension in the chain. Don't buy a road bike frame and swap to a single speed, you can but it's not the way to go.

Fixed gear...

yeah there are tons of hills in santa cruz...no I am not in PEAK physical shape...but neither are the roads up here...and having a bunch of extra gears, levers, deraileurs etc on my ride to strand me isn't gonna fly.

this bike is something to busy my idle hands, and spend money on, and make my own...and hopefully once all that's done...I'll be in good enough shape to ride the thing and get in even BETTER shape

and yeah...brakes are a must...at least up front...no excuse not to.

Craigslist has a bunch of fixies.

I keep looking but, if I bought one, Susan would kill me with it long before I had a chance to kill myself on it.

I tried riding my friends fixie Downtown yesterday and I damn near killed myself. HAHA. Fixies are too crazy for me.

yeah, I've pretty much decided on a "flip-flop" rear, so I can switch between running a free rear or a fixed cog...options are good.

my main reason for jumping into the fixed-ratio frenzy is the simplicity behind them...as a kid, the biggest effing buzzkill about cycling was when you heard the "POP-clack-clack-clack-clack" when a chain came off...and you'd put it back on...only to have it come off half a block away...I can trade efficiency and ease of use for reliability/simplicity....hence my Mk1.

what about an internally geared bike?

internal gears > fixed gear

road bikes are reliable these days. Been a couple hundred miles since I've had to adjust my derailleurs.

It's mine until saturday/sunday. Picked it up from a guy locally for another buddy of mine up in LA. He's coming to get it this weekend.

yeah that bike is sweet for sure paul...

I really am leaning towards finding myself a beater frame, that way if I don't wind up sticking with it, or I die, the investment will have been minimal

however, the returns of sticking with it, to me, are part of the reward at the end of this whole endeavour...i'll be in better shape, i'll have broadened my horizons, met new people, seen new places etc etc, with minimal investment
