SoCalEuro.com,

Please help me in this decision...

I currently have a 2004 1.8T, TipTronic Passat Variant, 2wd with 46xxx miles.

I often go to the mountains to snowboard and need a 4motion. Also, I'd kill to get rid of my Tip and get a stick.

I noticed this thread and want to see what you all think:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeropost?cmd=tshow&id=3715483

It's a 2003 W8, 6speed Passat Variant, 4motion with 89,900 miles for $13,900 OBO.

What are your feelings about the W8 vs the 1.8T?
What are issues that I may run into with the W8?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. TIA

- Eric aka kRimit

The W8 Passat was probably the most fun I've had in a VW for the week that I drove one. It too was a 5 speed. Just outside of warranty, it may be a little pricy to repair. But overall, a great move in my opinion

Dude, with those miles you better have a shizz load of $$$ in the bank in case anything goes wrong on that W8. Also, as far as value goes, the late great W8 has one of the worst resale values of anything VW ever made. If you absolute love the car and can't live with out it, I don't want to crush your dreams, but if anything less, I would highly reconsider.

Okay were do i start, Run and hide from that thing!! I work on these things for a living and I wouldnt think of owning one out of warranty unless you keep some $$ aside for costly repairs. I will say that they are fun cars when they are not having issues.

if you want something for the mountains that a ton of fun why not look into a biturbo audi wagon? i know they put that in the allroad and some of the others. I drove a biturbo allroad with a 6 speed and quatro (4motion) and it was a blast!. in fact it was at capo VW. just another option

ya im with the tech on that if you wanna up grade wagons go from variant to GTI its still a wagon.. in a sense lol but those are costly to repair and unless you enjoy wrenching 10 hours outta the month id stick with what you have...

It's a matter of money. If you can afford (repairs and service) then go for it. The W8 is a fun engine in a good 4 wheel wagon. Don't they have a 4 motion passat with the V6 in the US?

After doing research and considering everyone's opinion, I've decided to let this one go. Thank you all for your help, it really did make a difference in my final decision.

They do. How does it compare against the 1.8T? There's a lot more manual V6 for sale out there than there is 1.8T as far as variants are concerned.

Well I would Imagine you can compare them just like the 1.8t and vr6 golfs. Both are very decent engines. In your case I would lean toward the VR6 only because it has a little more low end beef. If you are planning on riding that all wheel drive through the snow....it is easier and more comfortable do drive the VR6 in slippery condition.
If you are looking into tuning the engine you would be better off with the 1.8T. Did that 1.8T come as 4 motion?

Very few came with a 1.8t, but they are out there.

All very sexy, but all are tiptronic... :-/

As Yoshi once told me, "I want to drive my car, not have my car drive me".

However... That second one caught my eye...

Thanks for the help - Let me know if you find a 5speed. :-D
