View Full Version : Cancelling the Big SoCal Euro Gathering

After some a negative response, i have been thinking about what the event is all about, i feel that people might have lost the point of the event.
I feel that we should end the series of NorCal vs SoCal Euro and Big SoCal Euro Gathering
Since it seems to have turned to be less about meeting and gathering of fellow european car enthusiasts, into more of a put it in my backyard, or pick a location that is perfect
and the complaints of why our friend with a WRX or G35 or Mustang is allowed to park next to us, and that they arrived earlier than me, so they got a better parking .... i dont know what has happened to car enthusiasts ... when i first started bring people together, i thought it was about the driver ... not the cars they drive ...
i thought it was just a common love for european cars, no matter what other background you were from, we were part of the same community
i thought that as long as the event was in a decent location, that people would want to come, and make the trek out, and overcome schedules and obstacles to be part of a group of car enthusiasts
if you feel that things are not what i feel, please let me know

Things are what you feel Lon (to very select people) , but dumb shit has been going on all along and we always come together to fight against it (or them)
the meet is still on.

well, honestly you and thi site were about bringing fellow VW and Audi enthusiasts together in the beginning.
It evolved from there.

I still think the even is a worth while enterprise to put on. I attend not so much for the cars or vendors but for the people that I know. Some of my best friends on here don't drive a euro anymore and I really could care less. To me it is still all about the people. I appreciate all cars whether it be a Euro or Domestic or Import. While it would of been nice to have the gtg at Quallcomm again I can side with you on the cost as it is great that this is a free event.
Anyone is welcome to try and host a big socal european car gtg... in fact take it as a challenge.
Just don't use SCE as the sponsoring organizer.
I took part in the first SC vs NC meet in SLO.
Then Santa Barbara
Then Ventura
Then Qualcomm
then... well that's it. IT's OVER!
Anyone who thinks they can set it up, go for it! I want to see it happen.

I miss the smaller events, getting there super early for parking at the top of the hooters lot

I'm sad that things have come to this. I was looking forward to this year as last year was awesome. I don't understand why a few people are so bent out of shape about the location, if it's further then it gives you the (fun) opportunity to drive your car further as well. People need to get over themselves and if they have a problem with the location then don't go. It's as simple as that! In addition if these people who have a problem with the event or location aren't there, I think that only makes it a better event. I'd rather go to an event with 100 cars of euro enthusiasts who actually care about the community than 800 cars with a bunch of people who only care about what's best for themselves!

Wow, I've been to all of them, and didn't realize it!
I just hope you guys figure it out, the community will suffer if you give up on it. But I understand the BS you're tired of...

Theres about a dozen of us out here in the desert. Put it in San Diego, that's a four and a half hour drive. Don't care. It's still an opportunity to meet up with all out friends and take some awesome rolling shots. We'll be there and won't mind seeing an STI or G35, so long as they are there for a positive reason like all of us are.
I say DO IT!!!!
No! Say it ain't so! I have been to every big socal GTG since late '00 and it was always a good time for us car enthusiasts. I know people are b!thching about the location but half the fun of a GTG is the caravan! I understand that people want it to be closer to their homes but there should be no complaints since venues are always switched up so that everyone has the opportunity to take a shorter drive to the GTG.
There will always be the haters of other makes because they aren't euros but I don't think that they share the same opinion as the majority of the socaleuro members. The true socalivw/socaleuro crew know what this community is about and it sux that those few are undermining your vision of a creating a community of people who just also happen to be car enthusiasts (not euro nazi's).

Sorry to hear about this Lon. The Qualcomm event was my first. ( I just moved out here ) and I thought it was awesome!
Your not the only organier having issues like this. Rey and I have been trying to get E30M3's together for quite some time (LA and SD) and people don't care to drive beyond 30min. I don't understand it. On the east coast we had SIGFEST for the E30M3's once a year and people come from very long distances.
Maybe its too easy here in SoCal. There are always meets close by it seems.
If you decide to go forward I'm willing to volunteer my time to help out. Just give me a shout.

so its this cancelled or is this just talk?
Fuck'em Lon, if they don't like it, they can stay at home. I don't care if its in SD, Santa Barbara or O.C. I will go, I don't care if I park next a Honda, BMW, F350, I like alsorts of cars, most all of us can appreciate any clean custom car, diversity in the car scene is great. This is a great meet to hang out and see friends you only see once a year since we all do live far apart and it brings people together from all around, I would hate to see it canceled.

Now please don't take this as me trying to start something, but my suggestion would be to have a section specifically for non-euro cars. I don't have a problem with non-euro cars as long as they aren't trashy and done right (and that's with any car for that matter, euro or not), but for photographic reasons it's nice to be able to take a picture of a line of all euro cars.

It's damn near impossible at Seaside Park to segregate cars. I was there in '04 for NorCal vs. SoCal, and it was pretty packed in that lot. Let them park where they want. If you come in a big caravan, chances are, you'll park by whoever's in that group. Take pics of that, then just be selective about your photography the rest of the day

Now please don't take this as me trying to start something, but my suggestion would be to have a section specifically for non-euro cars.
And you will, of course, volunteer to stand out in the parking lot and separate all the cars by origin.
You've got no problem trying to break up a caravan of 50 cars, telling cranky, tired people they can't park next to their buddy because he drives a Honda? Naturally you need to do this a quickly as possible to stop 100 cars from backing up into the road. Oh, and watch out for that idiot in the Ferrari who feels it is his right to do 75mph through your line.
Separate sections, be it by manufacturer, year, style, whatever, is a complete pain in the ass. I understand the attraction, but honestly, unless you are willing to spend 5 hours parking cars while missing the GTG entirely (trust me, it happened to a bunch of people the first time around), it's just not worth the effort.

if this even still happens, i have no problem helping out with things. 20THANNTURBO (http://socaleuro.com/forum/member.php?u=11941) made a good point that if I come in a caravan (as I most likely will), I will end up parking with them anyway so it won't really matter. If this park (I've never been there) does not allow segregation to happen easily then so be it, doesn't matter to me, I'll still come no matter what.
It was a suggestion not a requirement by any means, I'll be happy just to have the event even if the above car parks next to me :)

I didn't think of that, I never realized how far you lived until we went to CES that one year (shit, and that was a mid week gtg!!)
Anyways, I rolled in a Ranger and a focus for most of my SCE years, with no issue whether I parked in the row, or I parked elsewhere . . . I didn't care . . . I just wanted to hang out with peeps! (I didn't have friends in high school)
I do hate people crying about something to stupid . . . for one, The Q's prking lot is so freakin huge, if you want pics with your friend move somewhere to take the pic and move back. If there is a car in the way, I'm sure the driver would have been more than willing to duck out of the pic! The main problem is, I don't think anyone was asking . . . it's like a bad marriage . . . don't remember bad shit and bring it up later, solve it then and there, or don't bring it up at all!!
Who cares where who parks? Do we all have to cry babies and park next to our friends? Every GTG I've been to, I get out of the car and talk to people/friends, so where does it matter where you park?
FunktasticVR6
03-12-2008, 03:25 PM
If somebody wanted only euro cars, then what about those drivers that have their car in the shop and they wind up with a Honda rental? Just let 'em show up... Yeah, segregation may be difficult, probably pointless, If ur gonna seperate the dubs from the bmw's and those from the others, then why not also divide the vr6 from the 2.0's, etc.? It just makes no sense. I thinkith that some, hopefully few, just hadn't thought it through......

well what if maybe where ever the event will be held at u can have a map printed out that gives a quick overview of how to divid the ranks of cars. and maybe a for warning that any non euros (unless accompanied by a convoy) must park in a seperate area

Dude, go to Seaside Park and look at the lot. It's not huge. Theres JUST enough room for the number of cars that will probably attend. Setting it up to divide the cars just ain't gonna happen. But I love having it there cuz then you can hit up the beach or a good restraunt afterwards ;)

I have to agree. I didn't drive a minimum of 2hours to each event to see the same cars I saw last year anyway. I came to see the people I rarely get to see and have some good times. People know it's a floating event. If they can't get to where it is or have issues w/the venue, that's on them. Don't go, hope to see you next year.
I can't believe the bitching people do about an event they do nothing to support. I mean seriously SOME of the people doing the most bitching aren't even forum supporters. WTF!?! So let me get this straight. I find a site, they have some common ground w/what I like. Oh wait, they did something that doesn't benefit me directly (forgetting all the people who do what they have to do to get to the event if they really want to go) lets shit all over everything, not provide a solution or even attempt to help in the organization, just this sucks, I'm going to have a tantrum now. No, Fuck that. I also mean REAL help, not just lame ass internet ideas that you throw out for someone else to track down. REAL ACTUAL TIME OUT OF YOUR LIFE, like the rest of the people that SUPPORT the site and contribute time at the big GTGs.

This sucks for us noobs who don't have the same fond memories that you other guys have that have been around for awhile. And maybe the noobs are the problem, I don't know. Maybe the times of the chill meets are gone and a bunch of babies are taking the reins. I know that I had a blast last year at the Q and although I wasn't going to be able to go this year due to being in Vegas, I was sure looking forward to many more. I guess everything has to come to an end though eventually. Maybe it's time to pass the torch to fresh blood that has not expeirienced the hassles of organizing the event, and then when that guy gets fed up, he passes it on, and so on. I don't know, I guess I am just feeling sad now after reading all this.

Lon -
Do what is in your heart.
Personally, I've lost a lot of connection to the euro community lately, and I'll be the first to admit that I miss it. Some of my closest friends are those I met because of my VW. I think that there is a huge market for a big large GTG of friends and enthusiasts. BUT... you have to remember that it's NOT for profit, and you can't satisfy everybody.
I've managed FOR PROFIT shows, and it's a huge pain, because everyone feels that since they are all paying customers, they all deserve equal treatment. Unfortunately, part of making a profit means paying special attention to the customers who get the most publicity and attract the most attention while glancing over those who are 'just another of the pack', and some people can't grasp that. I've spent 10, 12, and 15 hour days at convention centers trying to make sure all the customers were happy before I realized that some people will never be satisfied.
10% (or less) of the attendees will always cause you 90% of your headaches. But, do you want to alienate 90% of the attendees because of that minority?

Growing up i looked up to low riders and hot rods....i gained a good deal of my car itellegence from imports, and today i drvie a euro proudly....
The going to my first big GTG last year ment alot to me. ^_^
because it was the only time where i could see really the time line of my car avid....it had the old school- new school- too cool for school- and the everyday weekend warriors.
Even more, it wasnt the static "dont touch my car" car show, people could walk up, casually chat, sit in the cars if they wanted.
So the mix of cars and cultures is a good thing, it keeps things interresting.
the "issue" last year, its a good thig it happend long after the event was over, because i felt embarrassed, here was a perfect day of cars, poeple and just great fun with enthusiats. and just a simple lack of consideration runined it.
i say let the BIG GTG continue, just make sure everyone remenbers why they came in the first place...TO HAVE FUN WITH FRIENDS, the cars are just a plus ^_^

If you don't like the events or the location, too fucking bad. Go put together your own event and you still wouldn't come close. You whiny bitches complaining about the location do nothing but give SCE a bad rep because you are probably the same ones who have the shitty attitudes and make others feel unwelcome.
You all want to bitch about other non-euro cars parking in the event? How about we have EVERYONE bring their "other" cars in support of "car enthusiasts" just to piss you little whiny bitches off? I bet you complainers ain't gonna do shit either! :liar:

the last gtg at seaside park was rad - a bunch (20ish) of us drove up for the whole weekend and camped at some place like 30 minutes away. i love camping.
I love camping too, Erin likes camping in a 5 star hotel, so its been a while since I've been. I wanna do a nice backpack loop through the Sierras. I stayed a week in Kings Canyon a few years ago, I really need to get back out. REI is one of my favorite stores!

Fuck this noise.
So a few whiney cry-babies don't want a civic parked next to them and the rest have to suffer?
If you're going to cancel it do it for a better reason like the fact that we have some douchebags that always come out and ruin it for everyone by racing around and either hurting themselves, their cars, or someone else (or coming damn near close to it.)
If you're a true enthusiast and not an elitist piece of shit then the whole "picturesque" nonsense shouldn't apply.
You want to take a photo of purely euros then organize your own event instead of showing up to someone elses and saying how you could have done it better.
If this event is shut down because of a few pussy complainers and not for something more valid then I'll just start looking for a site that has actual enthusiasts instead of a bunch of scenesters or people concerned with that crowd.

Bullshit. What's a year off going to change?
You're still going to have the same people showing up. Same bullshit situations. Same people whining about driving distance.

And then what's the point of having any gtg really?
Hardly anyone shows up to local events and the same asshats who ruin the big ones come out and ruin the small events too.
That's one reason I don't show up to gtgs anymore. It's not worth the time or gas to come down and see the people I do like hanging out with at the risk of either having shit go down or having hardly anyone there.
At least with the big gtg there's shit to do/see and there's a lot more people out.
A year off won't get rid of the dick faces that show up and ruin the meet by crashing, it just gives the powers that be, a little more time to plan something and get it organized since it is a FREE event, it takes some good planning and commitments to pull off, which at this point in time, it may be too late for everything to come together, I'm with you 100% on wanting this to happen and feel the same way you do about all the shit heads at the big and small GTG's Sean, but Lon puts himself out alot for this with vendors, sponsors, and a spot with our name attatched to it, so there is alot more to think about in the big picture of what would have been, what, a month and a half out from now?

Wow, sorry to hear that Lon. Totally understand, it's a huge undertaking I'm sure. I've only been to the '05 Event at Anahiem (Won big too! :D ) and enjoyed that event a lot. Most since have been a little further then I like, but thats my problem and not yours. (my one long drive is to Laguna Seca every year with my Teens for the ALMS finale) You know me, I'm not a kid and don't do too many of these things, but I always take yours into account.
PS, hope you show at the In-N-Out event later this month, and please bring a sticker for my #2 Son's Dakar 318is! :D

NO LON!!! keep this thing goin!!!!!you know i actually dont mind a cruise all the way up to irvine. sure gas prices are going up, but going up and coming back down will proabably take only 1/2 of my gas(hopefully. if i dont redline it all the way) but yea i was excited for this year because all the picture i see in Eurotuner, about the groups on the Eastcoast, they have huge caravans for shows that could be like 400 miles away. i always to experience that huge caravan feel with like 80 deep or more. last year all we did was meet at fusion and had a little caravan to Qualcomm, which is like 6 miles. it was convenient, but for me i didnt get that huge ass caravan feel like some of the other people get. i say forget the dickheads because they are probably going to stay at home since the meet is so far away, and if these dicksheads make it to the GET TOGETHER everyone will know who he/she is and probably show them no respect. Also, about having other cars there. simply put, if the car is nicely modded and clean then they should come to all kinds of meets. because like everyone stated it is about that diversity and CAR enthusiasts. NOT EURO enthusiasts. EURO enthusiasts can go to the weekly meets at the nearest starbucks or boba place. but this BIG GTG should be for all cars with the emphasis on the euro community. LON DONT CANCEL IT!! just my $.02 guys
