I am not 100% sure I need it -- warning light has been coming on intermittently, and symptoms not quite like the last time I had an alternator pulley failure.
But if someone wants to make a little money, who knows his way around the engine compartment of a Mk4 VW, it would save me either taking several hours off from work Monday, or else getting a rental car for the day.
PM me for more info or to schedule a time. I can drive to your location, in SD County.

Make sure you check the alternator harness that plugs in to the fuse panel on top of the battery.

Took it to B R U Automotive, 5625 El Cajon Blvd, on Monday. To those who thought I should be able to do this myself, or even offered to help out -- it is a whole lot more work on a TDI than on the 2.0 or 1.8T. AC compressor has to be moved out of the way, but then it is still a very tight fit. The guy at B R U said he would never attempt it without a lift, so he could stand underneath. I know there are guys who say they can do it from above, and I wish I could have had one of them show me how. But it is done now and hopefully the last time for a long time.
