My mom wants to buy a car so she can use it to practice driving.
Can she just go to a dealership and buy a car under her name without having a driver's license?
Anyone know how this works in California?
Thanks for the help! Better yet, if anyone can find me the regulation from dmv website, that would be great. Thank you again.

negative..law states the primary must have a legal drivers license...she can cosign if she has a legal ID card but thats about it...if a dealership is willing to sell her a car with no license...LEAVE THAT PLACE!!

i work at a car dealer as sales...so i know

So, If I co-sign the car, she will be able to get it??

you have to be the primary and she can be the cosigner, the primary has to have a legal license to drive...but since she will also be on the registration she can drive it aswell...but insurance will be another hassle...

the reason this is because the primary is the first responsible and the one who is supposed to buy the car and drive it, the cosigner usually is there for credit or income reasons...however some dealerships may do something called a straw purchase...thats when someone is financing a car for someone else who is not on the deal...this is illegal and usually causes the deals to be "unfunded" and the customer has to return the car or add the other to order...trust me ive seen this 100s of times

She has the driver permit right now. She just wants to own a car so she feels comfortable using that car for the driving test.
I guess she doesn't necessary needs to have a insurance to be the co-signer, correct?
Thanks for the info dude. For some reason, i can't find any of this info at all on the web.

its hard to find...but its something thats well known in the sales part of the car world...as far as insurance the company usually has both insured since the cosigner is also responsible...as far as being comfortable for the test...ya that makes a big difference...but still with no license she wont be able to finance a car by herself...her best chance is to have someone else be the primary..perhaps you and she cosign...her credit will still be used, and she will still be a registered owner of the vehicle, and when she gets her license she can legally drive the car...good luck man...if you have any questions let me know :tup2:

That sounds like a feasible option. Do you think the dealer will freak out if I bring this question to the table? I talked to a sales guy from Carmax and he sorta freaked out and told me that never mention this kind of thing to the dealer.

haha well if you go to a traditional dealership one of two things will happen

theyll say: he's right she cant do it alone

or theyll say im full of it and still go through the process and at the end as someone else to be the primary..or do some shady fake deal and youll get a call in two weeks saying to add someone else or bring the car back...this is true...ive seen it happen first hand

I've had to get a co-signer twice...every time the co-signer is the primary. The one actually driving the car is the co-signer.
