View Full Version : Need to borrow: Oil pressure test gauge...

***EDIT*** This is in reference to my Project Wolfie Digi II 1.8 8V

It is one thing I haven't checked yet and I want to see if I am truly having mechanical issues maintaining oil pressure, or if I need to do more electrical troubleshooting.

Does anybody have an oil pressure gauge that I can borrow?

Symptoms are as follows:

Car is fine, no lights/buzzers at start-up. After driving for about 15-20min I get the oil light and buzzer when I land the rpms between 2000-2500rpms (this is when the ECU reads from the high rpm 1.8 bar oil pressure switch according to the Bentley).

I can rev the engine up to about 3G and it will clear the buzzer until I maintain rpms between 2000-2500 for more than a second or two.

This problem existed before I changed the oil pump (36mm ABA in there now), gasket, pan, etc...

I did smell some burnt oil yesterday when I dropped the pan, but the color was good (has been recently changed for the 3rd or 4th time).

So, who has a gauge I can borrow?

it wouldnt hurt to replace the sending unit for the oil pressure if you dont know how old it is.

sounds like the oil is too thin. What weight you using?

both the .3bar and 1.8 bar sending units have been replaced.

too thin it sounds like to me. Toss in some 10W30 in that old bitch and see how it likes it?
This is the A2 right? HYD lifters?

yup, A2 Hydro head.

10w30 is thicker than 20w50? Guess I had it backwards...

its thicker when its hot.

yeah, I was backwards... Looks like another oil change is due...

Do I really need to replace the filter, or just drain and fill?

if you just did it, wont hurt it to reuse the filter.

Drain and fill should be fine.

How many miles on it?

Very good chance the oil is too thin. It fits your description too...15-20 minutes and the oil gets hot (thin). Also, that old engine is lickely to develope more leaks with that thin stuff.

the oil filter maybe has 200 mi on it. Engine has 153k plus

if it were my car, id just change the oil and go drive it. See what happens. Im thinking the old girl has 20 thousands on the bearings and shows low pressure with a thinner oil.
