For those care or dont care. Fehmi_MK5's older brother is flying out tomorrow night to Connecticut to pick up a Mercedes Benz Unimog series 404 and driving it back to San Diego.
He's bringing laptop with a webcam and a wireless card. So should have live footage ;)
i laugh right now, cuz his picture looks like a singles profile hahahah

he is brave to drive a 35 yearold truck across country that has just been de-mothballed by a european military service, Unimogs are badass, but I don't know about a cross country drive, especially in an early one, especially is its gas powered............... I hope his AAA is paid up.

Is he trailering it back or driving it back because at 6mpg and top speed of 59mph it would be a long drive back.
I researched one, almost bought one, but I liked the landcruiser instead. A Unimog is one of the only vehicles that can best a cruiser in the rough though, but I was scared of parts availability and expense, hard to return a part to europe and wait another month if its wrong or damaged.

i think its about 55mpg top speed, with approx 10mpg
and yes, he's driving it cross county, he's taken a 1.5 week off from work
and the picture is the actual car, looks like its been well kept and is in working order

Wow you would have to reset the pump 10 times to fill up full assuming that it cuts you off at $100.

There's gotta be a place he can fuel it up easier... I wouldn't like the unecessary attention at the gas station...
you: $1000 on 1 please
cashier: wait.. what...
you: erm.. I need 200 gallons...
cashier: I... I'm sorry, we can only give you 50 gallons...
you: ....
*long awkward silence*
you: ohhh kay... here's $200...

There was one for sale up in Big Bear a while back when I was up there snowboarding. Fully kitted out w/ a rollcage and everything for off-roading for 4000 bucks. Would've been soooooo much fun!

A friend of mine bought a mog about a year ago, and he's driven it a total of 5 times. First the engine blew on the 3rd time he drove it, he spent $10 to get a fully rebuild motor, then some 16 year old in a mustang crashed into his gf's mini which was parked in his driveway and it got pushed into the mog, which got pushed back a bit while in gear which screwed up the diffs and the tranny. Looks like the mog and mini will both be totaled.
He said there's 2 kinds of mog's. Mog's that are 30-50k and fully restored, and mogs that are less than 30k but need up to $30k of work done to be in good shape again.

Can't beat $10 for a fully rebuilt motor. At that price I would care if it blew every couple thousand miles. ;)
