I was wondering, is it a bad idea to chip a car that has high mileage? Kristen's GTI has around 90K miles and I was thinking about buying the GIAC program for her. She still has the extended warranty for 100K miles. Should we just wait until it hits 100K? Any input will be appreciated. :tup2:

i would just do it ;)
but thats just me
if you got the car regularly maintained, then shouldnt be much of issue
but after all it is a VW
i would do a check of all the hoses too

It depends on her driving style and how aggressive the chip is.
If she has a lead foot and a program meant for racing, she is gonna put a whole lot more stress on the engine than if she has a more run of the mill program and she keeps her gas pedal off the floorboard.
Performance chips enable more stress on the engine. Its usually the driver that makes or breaks it though. If the car has been a problem child, I might rethink chipping it. If its been well maintained and serviced, I'd say go for it.

Her car already hits stuff because of the kit haha. Who knows what would happen if it was lowww. I want her to buy them though. ;)

haha Yeah no oil pans need to be ruined. Cool, thanks Mike! What place do you have hook ups at? :tup2:

Yeah for sure. That totally makes sense. She would just be getting the 91 program and isn't an aggressive driver. The car has been maintained with all scheduled synthetic oil changes. We will check it out before we do anything though.
Thanks everyone for the input! :D

Is 90k miles really "high mileage"? I put 292k miles on my previous car, a Saab 900T; but I've never owned a gas-engine VW. Shouldn't they last just as long?
My TDI was mostly stock until 200k miles. Now it's a lot better.

GIAC chip with a good set of Cams will be fine on that type of mileage - my VR has 166k+ chipped...along with a few other changes ....;)
