So unfortunately, my 35mm SLR is going kaputz! I can still use it, but my lens broke and the film cover is being held closed with duct tape...

So, as a beginner photographer, what DSLR should i get? I'm not looking to spend too much or too little. I'm leaning towards either Nikon or Cannon (I know, too basic)

well, here's the thing. I have an N70 and the hubby doesn't want to go lower than a D70 (there is a D70 right?)

Check out the Nikon D60: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d60.htm

The D70 is outdated now.

Look at the D80. They have the kit that includes an 18-135mm lens.

If you have a lot of older lenses that you'd like to use with your new DSLR then you should stay away from the D40, D40x, and D60. These bodies don't have internal focusing motors. The only lenses that will auto-focus are Nikkor AF-S and Sigma HSM. The D70 and D70s are both discontinued but you can find a used one. The best bet would be the D80 or wait for the fabled D90 which[should] come out this summer.

DSLR as in Digital SLR?

The decision should ONLY be between Canon and Nikon. Other brands really aren't worth it in the long run.

What's your budget? what features do you like / dislike? what do you plan to take pictures of? And don't say everything!!!

Well, I think i want to stay with Nikon. I want to be able to transfer both my lense that i have now to the DSLR. I'm looking at the D80 more so. Or i might wait for the D90

As for budget, the hubby didn't put down a budget. We go off roading a lot and camping as well. I want to be able to use the camera for both. Pictures of the trucks, people, and place we go.

features, i haven't quite gotten that far yet. But, like i said, i think i want to stay with Nikon

Sticking with Nikon sound like the best bet. A used D70 would make for a great camera, save your money for better glass. Photo .net is a site I would recommend, they have great forums with the best people around. I shoot with a Canon but I'd be just as happy with Nikon as the two companies are often neck and neck.
