Once you let the factory installed german smoke out of the wiring, its impossible to get it back in. Cut your losses and take it to a shop, you already admitted you don't know what your doing. With wiring, without a book, basic knowledge of electrics, you won't get anywhere. Disconnect the battery, and tow it to a shop.

i hate car problems
no, if it burned, it burned for a reason, putting tape over it is half assed, you need to trace down why it burned, dead short or excessive draw in what ever circuit the wire was on, fix that, then repair the harness properly by soldering in new wires with heat shrink. Don't be surprised if it melted into a bunch of other stuff also, when one gets hot enough to melt off the insulation, if its not fused or is hot for too long, it can melt the insulation on surrounding, touching wires, causing a chain reaction. Nothing against your dad, but if he said put electrical tape around it.............. tow it to a shop or get someone else to help you. MK3's are notorious for wiring issues, and the usual aftermarket butchery of adding stereo equipment makes it worse.

sorry to threadjack, but mike, what's the significance of all the cars listed in your sig? dream cars? it looks interesting
A mockery off all the people that feel the need to list all of their numbered exotica for the rest of the world to see, not necessarily on this particular board, but others in general. Do we really care what the VIN on your car is or how many collector cars you can stuff into your sig?????
But if I had won the $150 million Powerball, rest assured I would be tracking down several cars on that list, specifically the Yugo....... I hear finding a pristine one is very hard to do.....
