power steering

my girls MKIV 2.0 is low on power steering fluid, i was told that you can only use OEM fluid...is this true, or is there a alternative that can be found elsewhere

Well, its like a mineral oil, the only alternative is Pentosin CHF 11S, which I believe is the same since its what is used in most all european cars, its what Porsche and BMW use, looks and feels the same. But that is $20 for a liter, so you might as well just buy the stuff from VW.
