View Full Version : S6 or S8 for next car?

Hello, everybody.
My wife and I are looking to get a new car. She is thinking about 3.2L A4s, whereas I am thinking about 2004 or 2005 S4s. It all depends on the money. ('cause we just bought a house)
So we had it narrowed down to those 2, but then I noticed an S8 parked out front of Miramar Audi, and now I'm kind of hooked on the S8 and the S6 Avant.
But I know nothing about these 2 cars. I have a Taurus SHO, which is nothing like a regular Taurus, but it's still a regular Taurus, kind of..but not.
The S6 and the S8 are more like the A6 and the A8, so they shouldn't be problematic in any way, like the SHO is right? I mean, it's all parts that Audi used in normal production cars, right? Where did the extra power come from in the S cars? How is the ride?

I'm just trying to figure out if I will be as happy in the heavier S6 or S8, or if they have reliability issues or anything, and they will make me wish I had bought something with higher production numbers.

Anyone have any input or suggestions?

Happy New Years to all, and to all a good night. (and I mean that in the "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with" way)

Tony

The S6 and S8 are sport tuned models of the the respective base models. You're likely to get bigger brakes, stiffer suspension, and increased engine output. The S8 engine get's it's power increase from tuning and possibly different camshafts. Don't know about the S6. As for reliability, you should check edmunds.com.

If you wanna see a S8 in action, albeit Hollywood action, check out Ronin with Robert Dinero.

If I had the money, I'd choose the S8 over all those cars you listed.

Hi Tony, CALL AAA !!

I think i met you before at Miramar. I have a silver 2002 Audi A4 Avant. I remember speakingn with a gentleman at the service departmant that had a A6 2.7t and a SHO. How many people have both those 2 cars right?

Anyways, I think both the S6 Avant and S8 are both top pick cars.

The S6 Avant would be more for a utility car that is sporty. It is smaller in size and probably easy to drive around normally and has the hatch for loading stuff.

The S8 would be nicer setup for having passengers.

I personally would take the S8 because its an amazing car.

plus the trunk on that S8 can hold like everything you own! its HUGE!!!

If you're driving a mid-sized car (Taurus), do you really need the added space that an A6 or A8 would give you?
If not, then stick with the midsized S4.

It would really depend on what you wanted the new car for? whats the function of it.

But the S6 Avant will hold the needs of many roles.
The S8 can also do a lot of different roles ;)

The S4 Avant would be a great overall car as well. But is a lil small for 4 passengers.

Functionality is everything especially if your married and have kids (or plan to soon). Unless this ride is going to be all yours and functionality is saved for the old ladys car. If thats the case hold off for the A5 coupe.

Personally, the S8 is all encompassing.

I guess you're right, madajb. We have the A6, and the SHO, so we probably don't need a 3rd sedan with a big trunk. Since we'll eventually need a car for moving kids and the related supplies around, the S6 Avant would probably be the best buy.

The S8 sounded cool, because I have seen Ronin. :D

After seeing the trunk of the A6, I can't imagine that the A8's trunk could be any bigger. The A6's is HUGE!

After doing a little of my research, I think we'd probably look for a 2002 S6 Avant. But I'd imagine that they're not too easy to find. I've never really looked, but I don't think I've ever seen one on the road. How many 2002s are out there?

Sorry, Bugzy. It wasn't me. I haven't been to Audi for service, and I haven't met anyone except employees.

Thanks for the help, guys. See you later.
First post of the new year? We'll see...

S8 is a big beautiful car! S6 is beautiful avant! If I had to choose from those two cars, I would go with the S8, it's an amazing car! Now, that being said, if you have an A6 already I would be more inclined to find something smaller and sportier, but that's just me.

ok, bottom line, if I were in the market (finacially) for an S8, I'd buy one immediately! That car handles amazingly for a vehicle of it's size.

The only B7 platform Audi that currently can be ordered is the A4. The RS4 likely won't be ordered until the end of 2005, some time around November I would guess. They just started an interest/wait list and I am the first name on that list.

I've heard that the new color "Quartz Grey" is supposed to be pretty hot. That with the white/black alcantara seats, is what I'm thinking.

I think the RS4 will be a bit out of my price range. A new S4 would be a bit of a stretch, and a used S8 will probably cost about as much as a new S4. And then there's the question of, Do I want to keep being a kid and get an S4 or prepare for when we have kids and do the more responsible thing, andget the S6 Avant? I think I need to just stay the hell off the internet, and stop shopping for cars they I'm not in the position to buy.

We'll see what happens.

Whaa? Kids? heh. We have 2 kids and have gone on vacation (driving about 6+ hours in one day) with all our crap for a week in my B5 S4. So anyone saying ya HAVE to own a wagon when you have kids is full of bs. Ok, I love Avants so no yelling Lon!

I went to Miramar today, and looked at the S8. Sweet Jesus, that thing is pretty. It's a 2001, with about 49K on it. I think they're asking about 48,000 or 50,000, which puts it right into new-S4-range. (2004 S4) I'm still way ahead of myself with buying, but now that I have looked it over, I'm not so dead-set on the S4. That car isincredible! and wth S6s being so hard to find, the decision is getting easier and easier...until someone buys the S8, or I find out that I can't actually afford it. Then I'm back to the A4 3.2L.

But I have to wonder why so many people get SUVs and minivans. Did stollers and diaper bags get bigger? It seems that everyone in my neighborhood who has kids, has a car and an SUV. I just kind of assumed that I will need a wagon or bigger. Of course, my neighbors are all tailgating A-holes, so I think they might just want the biggest vehicles they can fit in their garages.

Offer Miramar 4k under their price.

No, having children does NOT mean you need an SUV! The S8 has moe than enough room for a family of 4 or even 5!!!

i have a s4 avant, no family...the car is great becuase it is very understated...and when you beat someone through a canyon or on the street....it was in a wagon.....also, it is not an "aggressive" car...so you wont get as many looks from the police.... if you were single and dating woman with kids....foorrrrrrggggeeettttttabboouutttit! they will love you straight away..
do some minor work and bam....a real sleeper.....and again, when you beat someone...and you are in a wagon.. it must hurt pretty badly (especially if their girl is in the car)

just a thought

OK, here's another tidbit to throw into it. I went to my donut shop (in R.B.) and there was a blue S6 Avant in the lot. This was the forst S6 I have ever seen, at least since I have been pying attention to Audis. I pointed it out to my wife, and she LOVED it! She even followed me over to study it. (255s. Nice!)
She thinks it would do well, as the next car. But will we be able to find a pre-owned one at a dealership. (I'd rather do tht than buy from a private owner)

I'm also going to test drive the S8, if it's still there. Someone on this forum needs to buy that mean ass lookin 2 ton beast.

The S6 is fairly rare. And i doubt most people who own one even know they own one ;) if you know what i mean. It wasnt marketed as anything special. It was just a really nice A6 Avant.

However, i see a bunch of them on autotrader.com in the LA area.

There is no quote on quote official list rather, I was the first person to come into their dealership about 2 months ago inquiring about the car. That sparked the sales guy I spoke to (I'll get his name and number for you) to create I guess an informal list on who will be contacted first about the upcoming RS4.

I live at Hortense and Vista Del Monte, all of about 3 blocks away from you.

The S4 is a great car, no need to get rid of it anytime soon. Though i'm sure getting an RS4 in about 1 1/2 to 2 years won't be too easy. The guys at Rusnak said it won't be as mass produced as the B7 S4.

I (for the life of me) do not know what you mean. I get the impression you think the 5 series is the "best looking sedan" out there in that price??!! Please say it ain't so!

Personally, the one and only newly styled BMW I would drive is the 6 series, but hey, that's just me :)

I think the S4 or RS4 is a waaaay sexier car than 5 series.

Audi S6 Avant (C5 Platform)
Looks a bit different from the regular A6 Avant, has the wider 17x8 Avus Rims, different front grill pattern, chrome side mirrors, flat black flared door trim, flared fenders (as in 4.2models), as well as a host of other interior changes.

It puts out 340hp with a N/A 4.2, similar spec and engine size as the B6 S4.

The S8 has similar differences to the A8. This is the D2 platform.

Both are very handsome cars, but I think I'd rather take the S8.

Ahhh I'll be doing my laundry that day:rolleyes: No seriously if you need a hand I may be able to help a brotha out.

I personally think that the RS4 will probably cost somewhere in the $60-$65K range. Assuming the B7 S4 holds it's price around $52K and the new BMW E90 M3 is in the high $50's, the low to mid $60's makes sense for the RS4.

The RS4 will blow the 5 series out of the water on looks, even though it's not meant to compete with the 5.

The Aero is going to be offered in AWD in 2006 unfortunaltly not for now though. It does however have a full Traction control system in it and a partial limited slip type diff in it. It is a blast to drive and comes in with 250HP and then with a $500 investment in ECU tune you can be in the 335HP range or so. They seat 5 comfortably and can haul 4 bodies in the trunk!!! LOL!
