View Full Version : VW 1.8T Clutch Problems

This is a problem that I have been having with my Jetta 1.8T.

Basically its like this. My first clutch went out at 5,500 mile. No, its not a type-o it really did go out at 5,500 miles. I didnt drive my car all that hard and I didnt race it. I thought it was weird and I took it to the Volkswagen Dealership where I had bought it and they replaced it for free. They told me that it was my driving, I was riding the clutch and misusing the car in some fashion. They also got all raised voice over my strut tower bar and Neuspeed P-Flo intake at the time. They noted in their system that I had these mods and chalked up that its all my fault on the clutch. They replaced it free of charge on their "12,000 mile no fault clause" Which every car no matter manufacture or type SHOULD have. They just dont tell you right off. I also told them that there was a problem with shifting. It would grind into second and I couldnt get it back into first. I know, the RPMs must be down to be able to do that... Well they were, Im talking at Idle... Even when the car was stopped. They said they didnt know why it was happening. Well, I asked to see the clutch and flywheel that they replaced and they said that its just burnt out like any other. What clutch burns out at 5,500 miles regardless of how hard you drive it? I know that I had ridden more cars much harder than I ever did this one and never had to replace a clutch before. So, Im thinkin that VW clutches are just waaaay weak. That shouldnt be the case and I still let it go as just a fluke.
At about 8,500 miles I was having problems with second gear grinding and I would have to Jam the shifter back into 1st to even get it in first. So I had another VW dealership inspect the car. I told them that the clutch was just replaced at 5,500 miles and that shouldnt be the problem. I had had the problem with this happening before AND after the clutch replacement at 5,500 miles. The tech came back and said my clutch was slipping in higher RPMs. They then went onto say that they would not replace my clutch and I would have to agree to pay for it in order for them to replace it. So I then went on to figure out what I wanted to do and figured I would buy a higher grade clutch myself and install it myself because they were going to charge me $1,800 for the swap. Well, at 11,500 miles I had to change out the clutch at that point it was too late clutch gone. So I replaced it with a Spec Clucth and lightweight flywheel. So, I then thinkin that my car is fine and all better I drove it from Yuma to Boston and back to yuma, Did a the 1.8T Challenge and then about 3,000 mile of highway driving back and forth from Yuma to Camp Pendleton a number of times and then again to Boston and back from Yuma. Then over halfway to Boston the last time I noticed my clutch was slipping about 5000 RPM so I took it easy until it finally went at 37,800 miles. So thinkin that 15,000 miles is straight highway driving. Leaves about 11,000 miles on this clutch. I can only think that because it had a high pressure pressure plate and it was a higher grade clutch that it lasted that long.

I did alot of research on this and found that my clutch fork may be to blame for the whole thing. It is indeed bent. The play that it now has may be enough to cause the problem that I had been having. I did purchase a new stronger clutch fork through EIP Tuning and now I dont have the problem with the shifting and I seem to have a much better clutch feel.

What I would like to know is who out there that owns a VW is having problems with their clutches and what model and year their car is, and at how many miles their clutchs went.
I know there are allot of you out there because I have already talked to quite a number.
Mine is an 03 Jetta GLS.

ionno seems like your clutch isnt i dunno set right...kuz u now how clutches are 2 plates and one presses against the other well it probably isnt you its between you and the clutch which leaves the pedal n all that jazz springs or something like the 2 plates arent completely seperating. maybe warped gears? i dont know honestly but ive had a golf and that bad boy never went bad except for this stupid engine check and ecu which killed my brake lights for awhile. haha and when they repo'd it i hadnt changed the oil for 20k miles i hope that car dies on the next owner so i can laugh...

I put the last 2 clutches in myself (at 11,500 and current) , trying to ensure that its done correctly. Its done correctly the last two times. This fork was pretty tweaked. I dont really like other people messing with my car. Its better so that I know whats wrong with my car so that I can fix it when there is a problem. Especially when I dont have the money to be paying for others to fix the problem.

I have 2004 GTI with about 6000 miles on it. Since the day I had it, it tends to grind a bit from second to third at about 5600 rpms...This does not happen all o f the time, but it sure is annoying as hell. I plan on doing the vr6 upgrade. Anyone else have this problem?

yeah, everyone complains about the 1.8t clutch. i replaced mine at 35,000 miles with a vr6 clutch and g60 flywheel. it's been good so far. i only get gear grind if i shift into 3rd too fast. im in the habit of always shifting into 2nd before 1st because it's better for the synchros, so i don't have problems with 1st gear grind.

I've heard alot of problems with the 1.8T clutch, and an upgrade to a VR6 clutch has solved many of those problems...

So far i'm on clutch number 4

Unlike u... i was ruff with my first one... and cracked it in half while spinning out with 19. ( that was around 45k)

Im going to skip the story about the 2nd and third clutch... but leave u with this note: DONT USE CLUTCH MASTERS (2nd was at 47k, 3rd was at 52k)

Right now i have the VR6 clutch with a g60 fly wheel, I now have 178k on my car.
When they first put it in, it had a strage grinding sound when I'd put the clutch in all the way. It was my fork and they ended up shaving down a little and i've never had problems since

Renner did my last clutch, in fact, i dont bother with dealers any more, i go to him

bahhh...I've had 2 BRAND NEW transmissions put in my 2000 GLX, and 1 used transmission. They finally got it right after flying out some dude from VW of Germany. They took pictures of the whole install and even scribed every peice that went into my car. Funny how I haven't had problems since, and I havent changed anything about the way I drive. And they too tried to tell me I was an abusive driver, so I took them to court and won ;)

i love the vr6 clutch. in my opinion it should have come in the car. the only thing i noticed is that it makes a strange sound when the car is in neutral.

If it is a lightweight or single mass flywheel it will make noise like metal bangin around in there because the stock one is a dual mass and heavy at that. It is that way to quiet it a little. Other than that its normal. I used a VR6 clutch and flywheel for my third clutch change and I am using a VR6 clutch for this one too.
