I do believe this would be impossible even if you were Michael Phelps. I think the reporting agency just happened to leave out a life vest or boogie board of some sort.

Treading water can mean a lot of different things and its easier to float in salt water than in a swimming pool. Maybe they did have something to help them float but who really cares.
Its awesome that they found these two 8 miles off the coast after they were in the water over night.
Thankfully they were rescued and they didn't get caught in the hurricane.........
Treading water and or floating for 12 hours IMO would be easy if you consider the consequences of failing.

yes of couse it's a miracle and a blessing that they are alive, but thats besides the point of my thread.
Salt water or not, it's not like swimming in pudding brotha. I've had to tread water for 30 minutes in the Indian Ocean before swimming 1/4 mile. The tread killed me and I was in shape. I don't care if the will to live is that high. Your not treading water for 12 hours let alone 6 hours without some bouyancy device. Now yes, they could have used their clothes to trap air like we are taught in the Navy. Treading is defined as anything to keep you afloat minus floating, because their is no displacement of water. Kind of like treaded tires that displace water.
I'll do some more research and find out. Really interested now

I assume the see was calm and in that case it is very well possible to stay alive over the course of 12 hours. But I am guessing they had some sort of float device. If the see had been rough it would be hard to survive even with a vest. Treading water also needs to be defined. Swimming/floating/resting is more likely what it was.
