There was a corrado on fire on the side of the freeway today, I have heard through the grapevine that the older VWs are pretty susceptible to these things. The old bugs for sure, air starvation to the forth cylinder, then I have heard more than once that the corrados are the same. I called a friend up and mentioned the fire to him, and he said that NEW bugs do that too! A friend's ex has a new bug and the electrics just exploded one day and her car caught fire.
How common is this?

I would have to say not very. Since I have been around this particular community (VW's), I have not heard of any such incidents and certainly not a trend.

I have to agree with MitsSN... I haven't heard about too many cars burning. The only one around here I can think of was an Audi actually.

The older vr6 engines had a few cases where the fuel lines up near the fuel rail would seperate leaking fuel all over the engine catching it on fire. This includes SLC's and obd1 GTI's.

So electrical fires with the new bugs aren't very common? That is good news.

Someone in the mk3 Vortex forums had their mom's stock GTI burn up the other week.

Do they happen to know the cause?

It never helps.
Were you there the night asian Marco's A4 started to smoke from the boost gauge install they did? That was pretty scary, the cabin filled with smoke pretty quick for such a small piece of wire burning through. Dan and I spotted it from our cars it was so thick.

No, but I heard about it that night at Denny's, I believe.

Yup... Dan's quickness with a crescent wrench is legendary now. He had the battery pulled before the wire even burned all the way through.
Fuses... know them... use them... love them... just not in any kinky sick kinda way
