View Full Version : Advice on BOV on a 1.8T.
It's totally stock so it's just for the blow off sound.
Is there one that can be used with this engine and what's the cheapest one? My friend was telling me about this one were it blows off AND diverts so it doesn't run like shit.
any advice would be great.

The HKS SSQ is the crazy loud whistle one. You can buy a kit for it that makes it recirculate.
You can also try an aftermarket diverter instead of getting a blowoff with a diverter kit on it. It would probably be a cheaper prospect. The forge 007P makes a nice noise when its reversed. Its subtle but definately noticable. On stock boost pressure with out an air intake, you wont hear it as much though.
Just a warning, people may call you ricey for buying a diverter based only on its sound. I wouldn't worry about it though, there are alot of people on this site that did the same thing but wouldn't admit to it.

That and if it's hooked up to recirculate, you probably wont hear the sound you are looking for.

I just traded mine for a forge recirculating valve. Damn that valve was loud as hell!!!
I have the Forge 0007P valve and with an open air box mod I have done I can here it blow once in a while if it is semi quiet outside. But forget the noise it added some performance to my car giving me sharper and crisper boost levels for longer sustained periods not to mention about a 1/2PSI increase in boost at peak.

If interested I have a spare Forge valve for sale for $50 bucks if you are interested.
Identical to this one and only run on a car for about 5 months.

Yeah the HKS I hear is awsome but way out of his price range.
The NB is his daily driver, gas saver so you understand why he keeps it stock.
Steve:
Is it loud?
It's acually for my friend's NewBeetle. All he has is a cone filter and he's thinking of getting a freeflow muffler later on.
As long as it's louder then the sock one. lol
He told me search for a cheap, loud, bov that works for his car online :)

if it were me i'd get the loudest most obnoxious one i could find (with any luck i'll be needing one soon)
Not me. lol
Even my giant extra quiet magnaflow muffler drives me insaine.
I'd hate to hear a "PPyyyuushhssttttt" every time I shift at boost. :D
Are you boosting Your vw soon? You have a Mk2 8v, correct?

It will increase the noise some but not like the HKS RFL will. The Forge valve is louder than stock but it will not be like the rice valves you hear on Eclipses and Honduh's. You will get more of a muffled Phishhhhhh like weez and some spool up noise. IS your buddy in the area? If so I am in Cypress and I would be glad to meet up and let your buddy stick it in his car drive it and see what he thinks just let me know.
Play this clip and listen to the HKS valve going off on this SAAB to see how loud some can be. This is the valve I traded for this Forge valve since I could not take the noise anymore!!

Yeah, he's right off brookhurst and chapman.
I just called him and left a message. That would be great if he can test it out. For $50 bucks, I think he'll get it.
Anyways, I'll let you know eitherway.

Another thing to watch out for... some of those BOVs paint a giant target on you for cops.
A car with a big loud whistle noise when it shifts can attract some unwanted attention from alot of people.

Ive ran the hks ssq, greddy type-s, forge 004 bov. IMHO theyre cool for a week or two then it just gets annoying. Not to mention they cause the car to run rich killing gas mielage, the occasional limp mode and DTCs stored on the ecu. It is a bit of a hit and miss with bov's on the 1.8t. As far as sound goes the "whistles and chirps" are cool, but I loved the sound of my cai with the stock 710N or aftermarket piston dv the best. The spool up is way louder with the "darth vader" effect with a whoosh at the end. If you can suffice $200+ for a sound, lost gas mileage, DTCs, and limp mode go for it. Just throw on a cai, reverse your stock dv or get that $50 forge007 stevehayes01 is selling.

HKS sucks in re-circ..IMO.... First you cant hear the thing, second even if its in recirc youll still get a CEL after some time, and third like everyone else says its pricey.....
Ive never heard a GFB, Id like to though, but pretty much any By-pass valve is good for sound if thats what you want. Find a friend that has a stock eclipse valve, those sound good too, but you'd have to make a flange.

Unless your runnig a program that is made for "blow off" i wouldn't use a BOV. I've ran a bunch of different types on my 1.8t. But so far my favorite is the DV made by Dahlback. It's by far the loudest DV and it won't give you that lame fluttering sound that alot of the other ones will. It's also priced pretty cheap. www.ndauto.com (http://www.ndauto.com)
Own a Non-Turbo and want the BOV Swoosh Sound? Want others to hear the sound or TURBO spooling up without spending thousands on a turbo system??
Then get this easy to install BOV/Turbo Horn that will give you the pretige of a turbocharged car without the $$$.
oh thats right...having a turbo is all about pretige (i think they meant prestige, but whatever...dumbass...)

A CAI will give you all the noise you need.
In fact I got so sick of the noise, I went back to a stock airbox. I think I am a little too old for the racer boy image
My fried has a cone filter and you can only here it when the windows are rolled up, but barely.

installed the BOV and Intake, picture coming soon. What i have noticed was that when the BOV was installed at the stock location where the DV was at, the blow off was soft and not loud. When i moved it to the pipe, the blow off got louder.

Can I get a better shot? I don't see where it hooked up in the line.
Where is the stock place at btw. Are you sure it being louder in that spot isn't in your head? I'm going try to talk my friend into putting it there, see if your right.

for sure it's not in my head. hehehe. The stock location is where i plug up with the plug provided by ECS. Pretty much you want to disconnect the recirc. hose, and you will need like 2" of hose to connect the BOV to the pipe. You'll see what i'm talking about when you take a look at it. My GF drove the car around when i had it at the stock location, and she even said it was quiet.
Here's a better pic for you Ivan

So you moved the valve by the turbo instead of by the intake, where it's at stock?
