Longwood woman sentenced to 15 years for fatal crash

Associated Press

SANFORD, Fla. - A central Florida woman whose reckless driving killed her daughter and another teenager four years ago received a 15-year prison sentence Friday.

Mary Hill, 53, of Longwood, was convicted in February of two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of manslaughter. She could've received up to 30 years in prison, but prosecutors were asking for 18.

Hill's defense attorney requested a sentence of house arrest after the completion of therapy for severe depression and substance abuse. Hill is undergoing treatment at a Gainesville mental facility.

Judge O.H. Eaton had twice delayed sentencing because of questions about Hill's mental health.

On Aug, 7, 2000, Hill was driving her daughter and two classmates home from the first day of school when her BMW sped to an estimated 73 mph, went out of control and crashed into a tree.

Amy Hill and Carrie Brown, 14, were killed. Brown is the daughter of renowned gymnastics coaches Rita and Kevin Brown.

Another teen was critically injured but has made a near complete recovery.

Hill testified that her car raced out of control on its own.
