They are ok.....I'm sure once people start modifying the looks of it they will grow on to me...but as of right now they are just ok. I saw one in person for the first time yesterday at the Tijuana VW dealership.
p.s. - Where is my hoodie sweater lon??? :D

I didn't like it at first, but recognize the engines will rock. and then I remembered how much I hate stock Jetta mk4s, so the mk5 actually doesn't look too bad.
The GTI though ... I decried the mk4 as too round, and the mk5 is a total egg now. But I'm sure its still a blast to drive. I'll fall in love with them in no time, no doubt.
Maybe I'll even own one in 10 years :D

I test drove one today at ABD. I have completely changed my mind about them. I think the car has a ton of potential. Bone stock it handles and moves vastly better than the MKIVs. And once you color-match that ugly as sin billet front grill or put a body kit on it and lower it I think it'll look hot. It's also a bit bigge rthan the MKIVs, Side by side next to an Audi A4 they are almost idebtical in size. I think it's a great new car.

I gotta go w/Mitssn. Potential is not enough. I don't like hondas for the most part, but they have potential (I'd roll the RWD one in the other thread). 22k later and I have something I can be seen in?:wtf:
I liked the MKI, MKII, and MKIV stock and they looked even better when some time has been taken to modify it tastefully. I'm sure the engine's great and the suspension and the interior. I'm also sure VW will still treat you like a LEPER for modifying it. I don't wanna start w/a turd and try and polish it. Your hands will just get all brown and in the end it's all the same. On that note the Passat and Audi's are looking like winners.

I don't think it takes it out of the price range of many people so much as it takes it out of the price range of a VW.
I can't think of a lot of people(enthusiasts included) who think spending 25-30k on a VW is reasonable.

I think 'potential' may be too vague a word. EVERY car has potential. A pinto has potential (If you wedge a windsor motor in it and drag race it). I think the engineering behind the car is great and the design and look is sad. Like I said though to each his own. It doesn't bother me that others like it. I'm sure there are many things I like that others don't.

I test drove the GTI this saturday at Drew VW in La Mesa and I have to say I am very impressed with the new motor/tranny. DSG is great for those that have gotten tired of manual but dont like driving automatic. I give the car a  for stock performance and great modding potential. In the looks deparment the GTI is quite a bit better compared to the jetta, but still gonna take some getting used to.

My girlfriend and I test drove the new Jetta when she was looking for a new car. I must say those things are nice. I loved the interior and after seeing it in person the outside wasnt so bad either. Huge trunk as well. But we ended up with the new G6. It had 50 more hp and got better gas mileage. I was very disapointed that we didnt get the jetta but you cant argue with the facts, the G6 was a better deal. The transmission rocked in the jetta, couldnt even feel it changing gear but when I put my foot down the car kinda hesitated on me, it didnt just get up and go. Wondering if that was a computer comtrolled thing or not.
Just letting everyone know my opinion on the subject

When the new body style came out... I was pissed. I thought it looked too much like the toyota corrolla or some other japanese mid-size.
Then one day, I was at the dealership getting some parts and I was waiting around. I went over and peeked in the floor model of a shiny black jetta. The salesman came over and told me to sit in it. I did... it was pretty nice. I liked the placement of all the creature comforts as opposed to my MK Jetta (a few design flaws). It was a very comfy fit, more leg room (I'm tall), more trunk space, etc.
Next I went and sat in the GTi, now that fit like a glove!
Well now the new models have kinda grown on me. I'm not one of those techy VW guys that knows all the specs and ins-and-outs of blah. I'm just a consumer who likes vw's for their styling, handling and drivability.
Have I inserted my foot far enough into my mouth?

I think the jetta is a better looking mk5 because
it looks like an actual car. It look exactly like a carolla with a vw badge
to me though.
Better looking then the Mk4 I think because it doesn't
have that steep hatch that made it look like a gremlin or something
to me. The front end wasn't bad though.

If your iffy on the looks, a drive will change your mind, beauty is on the inside right? I drove one and since I do nothing but work on and drive BMW's for a living, I was impressed.
Us 2.0T guys know, anything that has a 2.0 liter that can reach torque levels of a full size pickup with bolt ons, very nice!
GIAC did some finalizing development work on the 2.5L chip using my fiancee's MK5, the chip in the 2.5 is a night and day difference, huge midrange and lower end gains are to be had, and Garrett said with an intake, exhaust they are even better, and cams even more.

I own a mkV and a mkIII. I like the mkIII better body style wise, but the mkV is pretty cool too.

like the Mk5 GTI way better than i like the Mk5 R32 and the Mk5 GLI?? Dunno if that makes sense, but i find the Mk4 GLI and Mk4 R32 better looking than their newer selves. IMO
