Hey guys...
Wondering if anyone out there knows someone handy with writing an IT resume? I'm looking to step back into the industry and I'd like to make it sound like I still know what I'm doing (I do, I swear!)... and add in some experience I've gotten from running my own small online businesses (e-commerce/shopping cart stuff).
Anyone know someone ? or know how ? I'd be willing to make it worth someone's time...
Also if anyone knows any openings (entry to mid level), toss some info my way ;)
Danke!

Craigs is gonna start charging for employment listings, so that list may, depending on this move, decrease or increase its usefulness.
Perhaps you should post up your resume draft and we can have a look to see how to make it punchier.

Alright...
But please, constructive criticism only. I wrote this myself and have added to it here and there, but really have NO idea what a final resume should look like... Most all of the jobs I got were referals based on my job performance, not through this resume (which is why I'm nervous!)...
NOTE: could we bump the .doc size limit up to like 50k or something ? :)

Work History
Owner / All positions
Mohawk Motorsport / LamborghiniModels.com
3900 Fir Tree Drive #3J
Riverside, CA 92505
Founded Mohawk Motorsport with IT knowledge, as an online marketer of Volkswagen aftermarket parts, focused at the New Beetle. Drawing from networking and website development experience, I developed a presence on the Internet for the company, including integration with popular e-commerce backend applications. I also developed a custom catalog database for control of product pricing and availability, and specifications.
LamborghiniModels.com was a secondary venture, based on Mohawk Motorsport, which also draws on my IT experience and creativity, as a growing, but already popular, online seller of authorized Lamborghini die-cast models. Again using common e-commerce backend solutions, and custom catalog database design, along with a customized web site presence, this venture keeps me in top for in all aspects of website development and PC/server technologies and maintenance.
Both company web presences are built on existing server resources, built and maintained by myself in a data center environment. Monitoring of server resources, and trouble-shooting of network issues, as well as database performance issues, is a daily task. These business sites, as well as 20+ other personal web projects are supported by a 4 server network, which handles web, ftp, email, and database needs. Servers are also a live hosting environment for selected non-profit projects that I support, furthering my attention to network performance and reliability.
Network Engineer / LAN Administrator
GameStream Internet Café
North Queen Street
Auckland, New Zealand
September 2001 – December 2001
Rebuilt café LAN, while upgrading software and hardware on all PC’s connected. Established stronger, faster connections with 2 upstream providers, giving the café more reliable outside communication.
Constantly monitored the network and all PC’s for performance and reliability concerns, including virus protection, and network security. Managed Windows 2000 domain environment to control customer login and billing records.
Network Engineer / Web Developer
Extreme Internet
8655 E. Via De Ventura Ave.
Scottsdale, AZ 85258 USA
March 2001 – June 2001
Performed an audit on a telephone company data network, to fulfill Extreme Internet’s portion of a contract. Network was comprised of Wellfleet / Bay Networks / Nortel devices, for carrying dial-tone to CVX 1800 modem racks, and over to the IP networks of multiple local and national IP providers. Frame relay and ATM circuits were extensively used due to Qwest/Uswest network support in the southwest.
Comprehensive documentation was created during the audit, to replace lost and out of date originals. New documentation was placed in a database and searchable web architecture for ease of use and user permission controls, improving on the previous storage system. Cold Fusion was used extensively in this portion of the contract.
Solutions for an upgrade to less proprietary and more reliable network devices were devised and offered to heads of both companies. Contract dissolved before implementation stage. This entire process utilized the analytical skills I developed in past experiences, and allowed me to further develop them. Documentation skills were also heavily used, as well as reverse-engineering of configurations to create new up to date records.
Network Engineer
AboveNet Communications Inc.
8100 Boone Blvd. #110
Vienna, VA 22182 USA
March 1999 – August 2000
My employment at AboveNet saw a progression from LAN and small network interfacing and development, to the administration and maintenance of a Global IP network based on high-end Ciscohardware. Integrating customer installations to the internal backbone network was a primary task in this job, and it allowed me to gain new familiarity with a large number of network device types and interfaces.
This task alone allowed me to further my knowledge and experience with Cisco IOS and hardware ranging from low end switches, to the 12016 series routers which included fiber optic cards up to the OC192 capacity. Other systems frequently used were Cisco firewall devices, Foundry switch and routing devices, Juniper routing devices, and various hubs and switches used by AboveNet customers.
In addition to my network administration and maintenance role, I also performed various server administration tasks including backup procedures, installation of various OS platforms and software, and recovery of damaged and corrupted systems.
While at AboveNet I also carried out various network maintenance and deployment tasks on a physical layer level. These tasks included design of, and implementation of basic LAN wiring, structures, and layouts. Equipment rack management and installation also included documentation and upkeep of cooper wire and fiber optic cabling.
Network Engineer / Web Developer
CrossLink Internet Services
5537-C Hempstead Way
Springfield, VA 22151 USA
October 1998 – March 1999
My job in the IT industry, was with a medium sized Internet Service Provider located in Southern Virginia, that had users spread across the east coast of America. My original position with the company was that of a Network Engineer, assigned to working on machines co-located in their offices as well as their dial-up access points across the eastern seaboard.
Working on this network allowed me to get first hand experience with network devices and protocols such as Routers, Hubs/Switches and Bridges, TCP/IP, IPX, SNMP, PPP, SMTP, POP3, NTP, NNTP, HTTP, and FTP. Access methods used to interface with them included SSH, VNC, and Telnet. Setup and admin of various server types and machine architectures was also a daily task, as well as maintenance and administration of the office LAN, based on a mixture of Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms.
My role as a web developer allowed me to expand upon my self taught HTML skills, adding PHP, Cold Fusion, Perl and CGI to my skill set. I became very adept at Cold Fusion programming and design, and have pursued that mainly since this position. Web site layouts and structures for customers included database integration, dynamic generation of content, security functions and messaging systems being built in house. Private contracts I have fulfilled since leaving CrossLink have included similar, and more developed application structures.
Education History
I began learning the skills for my IT careers with hands on experience from home. To further the skills I taught myself I attended a business school based in Virginia USA, and participated in direct certification programs.
Strayer University – 1996-1998
http://www.strayer.edu
Virginia USA
GPA 4.0
Certificate of completion
While attending Strayer University, I enrolled in classes geared towards network management and development, including but not limited to intensive education on Micrsoft applications and platforms. Classes attended also included C/C++, Java, Visual Basic and Delphi Programming, Unix Administration, Novell network deployment and administration, and hardware technologies. I received certifications in Computer Information Systems with an emphasis on networking and programming from the university.
Microsoft Certified Professional - 1998
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
While attending early classes at the university, I pursued personal certification by Microsoft as a MCP. My experience with Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Server, as used in my personal computers and web servers was enough to gain this certification. I plan to further my certifications to include more Microsoft certifications, and additional CISCO systems certifications.
Further personal education
I constantly keep informed about technologies that are affecting the industry. To facilitate this, I have attended many private seminars and courses pertaining to various programming languages, web application tools, and network related operating systems and devices.

I'll read it tomorrow (too groggy), but I'll tell you right now -- too wordy. I'll be more specific tomorrow.

On a quick skim, it's far too wordy.
Make your paragraphs bullet points, and put the details in a cover letter.
Also, I don't see the buzzwords I am looking for. If you worked with web servers, where is the IIS or Apache? What type of servers, Dell? Compaq?
Remember, the first person to see your resume is usually HR, and they are going to skim for buzzwords that are in the ad you are responding to.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm gonna go through it and totally rebuild it today. Hopefully I can get it shaped up a bit better. I tend to get lengthy in my descriptions of things (which wasn't a problem describing products on my sites)... so obviously I have to fight against that urge.
When I get back from a lil medical appointment this morning, I'll toss it around in word and make something better.

Looks better. The only thing I would change is to not condense your acronyms.
For example: IIS 2, 3, 5 could become IIS1, IIS2 and IIS3. Same with the 802.11s.
Also don't write MS, write Microsoft.
It's a small thing, but it may help with automated resume keyword scanners.

Looks good. From this point, it's just tweaking.
Versions should be abbreviated in the same way, so if you do write Windows ME/XP then other software such as Photoshop should also be Photoshop 4/6/CS, and IIS 5/6, 802.11a/b/g, etc.
And Paypal, I believe, is one word.
And yes, put Microsoft in front of everything relevant, don't just say Windows or MS Office. Same goes for VNC -- which VNC and what versions?

Riverside VW picked me up for my parts experience, as some of you know by now. Thanks for all the help with my IT resume, I learned alot from it! I just couldn't pass up a good deal that was presented to me, and the chance to use the VW parts experience I've gained from running my business for the past few years...
I was a vendor to Riverside VW for a while, supplying them with aftermarket parts and accessories. Now I'm behind the counter helping them get the OEM stuff out to the folks that need it.
If anyone from SoCal needs parts, call me at Riverside VW and ask for Russ in parts, and I'll work the best possible deal I can on what you need! (951) 509 2125

Bringing this back up....
Won't go into details but I no longer work at Riverside Volkswagen, and I've been reassured of why no one likes sales people.
I'm going to hit the books and re-cert what I had before and what I know, and maybe move forward and get some new certs that are out there. In the meantime, I'm looking for something entry to mid level again. Desktop support, Network support/admin, Web development areas are prefered.
If anyone's got an open desk at work that needs filling by a hardworker, 110% computer geek (thats happens to dig dubs as well)... throw me a line and I'll get myself in for an interview. Not asking for someone to hand me a job or vouche for me, don't get me wrong. But if you know of an opening, let me know.
Thanks!
