Open track?
Be very cautious of these events. Nothing wrong with a little racing, BUT
*your ordinary car insurance will NOT cover you (body) or your car in case of injury
*there will be pro's there who do not mind at all giving your car a little "love tap" to bonk you out of the way of their "line"
* if there are no instructors, there may be few to no rules, and there won't be anyone to correct your "line" if you're wrong and potentially getting into trouble.

Not that I wouldn't DO it, and I have run "open track" with NASA before, but you have to be ready to go home with a damaged car or no car in case of any little incident.

Although, most of what you say is true, I've been going to Open Track at Willow Springs for over a year. There IS driver's class in the morning, with instruction as it relates to your line and the overall course. Also, there are experienced drivers that will take you out to the track and give free advice and assistance. Driver's are classified by experience, and corresponding wrist bands are attached to each driver. Colored wrist bands determine who is on the track, in effect separating experienced drivers from beginners. Beginners should always exercise caution, and I'd rather see you get your agression out on the track rather then on the community streets. I would recommend for some of you to come out and just spend the day watching and smelling the burnt rubber and exhaust fumes, and a severe assault on your hearing, it's FREE:D

Completely agree on the "take it to the track" idea!

I've taught on track for the Quattro Club, Donutz, and Thunderhill Street School for 3+ years now, but still admittedly am much of a beginner, so I'm on the same page. :D

BUT I strongly oppose schools where you get just one quick orientation to the line, instructors aren't required to be in the students car in EVERY session until they're fully "signed off", and there's no download meetings after every session. that are mandatory for every driver.

If this event offers "timing" of your laps, that's where trouble begins as you try to get ahead of your peers and make errors in judgement to "get ahead". Insurance companies generally do NOT offer coverage for "timed trials" or events with timing in any way, so be careful- you're on your own there! Also, if insurance companies find out you're driving in open events, they can & might cancel your policy. <<<<< a lot of this information is also repeated in AudiWorld right now, in a VERY long thread on the Motorsports Forums, with the same information spoken by people with many more years teaching than me.
