So I have a 99 1.8T Quattro and when I start driving in the morning or after a cold engine, I get a ticking noise that accelerates as revs increase. But then as the motor warms up, the ticking goes away. Is this a valve thing? Should I be worried?

not sure, but the 1.8t has known to have a nice ticking sound from the valves, or rather the typical 5v per cylinders generally have a nice tick ;)
but not to say that this ticking might have something to do with the B20C5 motor you have transplanted into your Audi

oh my bad, so many you got a spun bearing? *cough* pretty common on Spoon motors, no?

Also there are synthetic motor oils that will help address the tick that most lifters produce on cold starts. On my older SAAB C900 I used Marvel Mystery Oil as an additive and it dropped the tick on cold starts completley.

I'd start with trying a lighter weight oil. 0w30 for example. Like Steve mentioned, there are some oils and additive that usually can address this. It's not necessarily normal, but it can happen from time to time.

cant argue with that
but side note, the Spoon B18c motor with the spun bearing drove pretty nice, even with a spun bearing ;) and it did tick and tock while i drove it ;)
