So, you all know that I moved up to Montana. I figured I would need a good winter car, and since I have always had my eye on the WRX I went out and got one today. A 2005 WRX Wagon 5 speed in WR Blue, to be more specific!

I guess you can figure out that I traded my GTI in on this car too. So that means I will have some mods to sell. I will come up with a list and post pics of the new ride as soon as I get them hosted.

Edit: My GTI goes in on Monday after I put it back to stock.

Here it is:

when i first read the title of this thread, I thought Eric traded the Tacoma in on another car! LOL, Subie is great, should be excellent in the sno. Tell me Adam....do they still have that "No speed limit in day light hours" thing with a $5 fine for waste of natural resources thing goin on up there? or am I still asleep and dreaming?

Thanks Everybody! This car is pretty fun, and you all know I had to stay with the turbo thing...haha. I have only a few small plans for it right now, tint and some kind of intake (feels a little anemic). Other than that, I just plan to drive it around and have fun exploring.

You all would love it up here, it is so beautiful. The other day my wife (no, not the sheep, Alan) and I went on a 7 mile hike to a lake in the local mountains. Awesome hike, can provide pis if you want!!!!

I am really glad you all like it! I put about 200 miles on it today just driving and exploring.

To answer an earlier question, no the MontanaBahn is no longer in existence. But there are plenty of back roads that the MHP cant possibly patrol them all!

I will upload those pics of our hike to the lake when I get a chance tomorrow.

Tony is correct, I live in Whitefish (NorthWest Montana) which is about 60 miles from both Canada and Idaho. If you know where Glacier National Park is, I live on the west end of it.

Chris, thanks for the invite to AWJunkies.com, I have registered and my username is WRXWoody. I am mostly lurking right now, checking out mods and all. I will post up soon, I promise.

As for Alan's (MadAJB) comment....Middle of Nowhere = No traffic and plenty of back roads, including some rally type old mining roads!!!! :smokem:

good choice, i like the wagon alot better that the coupe (no offense Chris)

as far as all these you need a AWD car up there, shut the hell up, it's not like any of you have been there :P a front wheel drive car is just as capable in the snow as a AWD car. and if you think i am wrong, just follow me up to the mountains someday (up in washington state that is, there's never snow on the road to the mountains in socal)

Depends on the car and the depth of the snow. For fresh snow over about 6-7 inches, AWD is real handy, since you have "push" as well as "pull". Especially if you are going up a slope.
-ajb
(Plus you don't get that "Hey, go sit on the hood of the CRX in 15F so we can get enough traction to get out of the driveway" adventure in an AWD)

you'll find out this winter how well your GTI will do in the snow. i can go anywhere an AWD car will go and have no problems. it all about experience, in fact i could take my 2WD nissan hardbody and have no problems.

but i have been driving up to the mountain to go skiing/snowboarding since i was 16 (i am from washington state so there was snow on the ground 90% of the time)

I grew up in the mountains, and took my drivers test with 2 inches of snow on the ground, what's your point?
Physics is physics, and there are some times when four wheels driving are better than two.
It's not debatable, it's just fact.

actually it's all about driving experience in the snow.

you could have the best snow handleing car on the planet, if you don't know how to drive in the snow it will do you no good.

that is why i can drive up the pass in my rear wheeled drive nissan pickup and pass the AWD that went into the ditch.

I assumed competence in less than ideal conditions was a given for this conversation.
Guess I shouldn't have.

On a related note, hey Woody when's the open house? =)

i tell you what Alan, you go test drive an AWD car and i will keep up if not pass you in just about anything.

you can be the most competent driver but if you don't have alot of experience in the snow it will do you no good.

Ok, Maybe I should explain this in _really small words_ so you can follow along:
In some instances with the same driver, AWD is better than FWD.

H2 vs your crotch rocket?

I'd have to side with Alan here

i totally agree, but 90% of the people in socal have never driven in the snow, and i don't mean the "non sticking to the road crap, i'm talking the snow that has been packed down for tha last month snow."

and if you were driving the H2 i'd probably still keep up or at least pass you when you put it into the ditch of off a cliff, cause you being a socal native i doubt you have ever driven in the snow. although i have never ridden a street bike in the snow, but i have ridden dirt bikes in the snow

Can't we all just get along....:D I actually wanted a good excuse to get this car, as I have really liked this car since it was introduced to the states a few years ago. I know that front wheel cars do just fine in the snow, but what better way to convince the wife that I had to get this car?!!!

By the way, Ed, you and all of SoCal are invited to come up here and go snowboarding with me anytime this winter! This will be my first year with a season ski pass, so I will be able to actually try to get good at it. ;)

Hey now!!!! :p Nope I still have the Taco but this was one of the cars I had my eye on before the truck. I test drove a silver one and loved it but they weren't going to give me enough for my Civic. Oh well their loss. Congrat on the new car!! So whens the first mod?

then you would be unstoppable in a quattro with snowtires! LOL I used to keep 300lbs of sand bags in the garage to put in my truck bed when I would go up to the mountains, I never had a problem but at times I wish I had 4wd whenit came to an icy slope just to feel better.

The subies are slowly movin' in... nice choice! There's a big intake debate on the subie forums.. For the most part, they say they're useless.. but hey, more air is more air.
