Hello fellow AUDI enthusiasts - I am looking to buy an AUDI A4 (2001/2002/2003) FWD/AWD either from a
1. private party
2. dealer - preowned certified

I am so new to this that I would like any advice coming my way:D

Which should I go for? I have been browsing for cars typically with around 35K miles on Edmunds and KBB and a price of $20 - mid 20K is what I see myself paying - ps correct me if I am wrong

Fellow AUDI fans residing in San Diego - what options do I have apart from Metro and Miramar AUDi dealers? Hoehn is one I know of - but how cheap will I get?

I would really really appreciate any input to help me take a step in buying myself a car:).

first of all, welcome to our lil humble comode (pardon the pun).

i guess the first question would be what year car are you looking for?

the model years are as follows:

"B5" 1996-2001
"B6/8E" 2002-05
B7: current

judging by your price range you are looking at a late B5 or an early B6.

in my opinion, your biggest choice is engine. there are two basic engines available in the A4: a 1.8L turbo engine and a 30 valve V6.

If you are planning on modding the car (ie chip, exhaust, et cetera) you will find it WAY easier to go with a 1.8T...while in base form the 4 cyl engine is slower, there is a lot a room to improve and the mods are easier and cheaper to find.

each model year has its quirks and such, and those can be covered in detail later.

the V6 powerplant is smoth, strong and solid. however, it's not the route to go if you want to do some serious modding. a chipped 1.8T is as fast (if not faster) than a stock V6 a4.

that being said, tehre are some options available to the v6 that aren't available to the turbo engine car....those are model-year specific.

as per reliability: the cars are generally reliable as long as they are properly maintained. people tend to have better luck with the v6.

also...a fwd a4=a volkswagen. get the quattro.....sure it's southern cali....but come on, to me, getting an audi without quattro is like buying only the left shoe.....that's just my own bias there.

as per the specific dealerships, i'll let the SD folk chime in on that. here's one important thing to remember: don't concentrate SOLELY on a dealership's sales department...paying even MORE attention to their service department....the salesguy's probably only gonna see you once.....the service department will be your main contact with the dealership....

i've been working with and at dealerships for quite some time now and i can tell you first hand that, almost invariably, how well you are treated (ie if they give you a loaner or not) is directly related to if you bought the car there or not....so keep that in mind :)

g'luck on your search.

I also went and checked the Hoehn and they are slightly more expensive! I will be visiting them soon to see the cars in person.

Now, I have some good deals from privater party sellers - is it possible to get that car certified from an AUDI dealer at a good price? This way, not only do I get a decent car for less, but also get itAUDI certiffied:D

Comments and suggestions welcome. Thank you all again.
