looks like a super fun trip :)....i'm a big off-roading fan....i hear that the cayenne/touareg are actually pretty good off-roaders, is that true?

It's nice to see that a sport utility vehicle is actually being used. Too many people in Cali buy SUV's and 4x4's and never use them...kind of a waste of money. I'm kind of a culprit too when I had my AWD WRX, but I did use the hell out of it autox'ing and doing mountain runs :tup:

well, a v6 base is like ~$38k...the v8 base is ~$44k...$40k fits nicely in the middle there :)

It was up near Pismo Beach. It's roughly a 4 mile trip on a barely maintained dirt road with 15 water crossings ranging in depth from 3" to 18". 1.5 miles down the dirt road is a trail head that leads to "Little Falls" which is a 15' waterfall that you can slide down into a pool at the bottom. At the end of the trail is another trail that leads to "Big Falls" which is actually 2 falls, one is about 25' tall and the other is about 80' tall. the 80 footer has a pool deep enough for cliff diving. After the Big Falls trail head the road is no longer maintained which made for some harry experiences. I only made it back another mile because the trail got a little to rutted and there weren't many places to turn around so I took advantage of one before I got to deep. Had I been traveling with another vehicle we would have gone farther but with nobody to pull me out of a tight situation I didn't wanna push my luck.

Yes, I do take my $40k (I like that better than what I actually spent) SUV offroading. This is actually mild compared to some of the other stuff I've done in this vehicle. The Touareg is an amazing offroad vehicle. It's handled everything I've thrown at it.
